Is this something I need to call the vet about? Our newly adopted (we got her in early January) mutt (pomeranian x jack russell) keeps licking everything. She licks herself, the furniture, any human skin, the floor. This can't be normal. I'm pretty sure last night she vomited up a "hairball" of some sort from licking so much.
Re: Excessive licking - dog
I agree with this completely. Licking is type of OCD dogs can develop and many, for whatever reason, do.
Thank you! I'm trying to be overly cautious and agree that it may be some type of OCD or anxiety. She's contently laying next to me now so I think it might be some type of self soothing for when she's not touching us? We aren't sure of her history.. She was brought to the shelter by animal control but was already spayed. We are assuming she was someone's pet at some point but aren't sure why she ended up there. Maybe some type of past trauma?
My dog has this OCD issue too. She used to eat grass (not to make her sick...just for fun) or she'd eat chunks of dirt or chew on rocks. A vet I talked to about it says it's more likely a compulsion than a diet deficiency.
Ever since November since it's been cold, the dogs have been inside more and the grass is dead, so she's replaced eating grass with licking. She licks the couch, the floor, her bed, and the other dog. It's just her thing. We do tell her no when she starts licking in the other dog's ears and his butt-hole, which she's particularly fond of. It's incredibly gross.
