Dachshund potty training..

HELP! Hi I'm new to the nest... here's the story for the post..

My husband and I have a miniature dachshund, Dexter. He's 7 months old. When he was about 2 1/2 months old he had pancreatitis. So as a precaution and because we didn't know what caused it the Dr suggested we give him his vaccines over time. At the end of December we were finally able to take him outside safely because he had just been given the last of his shots. We were using pee pads and still are because he isnt quite getting the concept of going out.

Anything you know of that might help us move the process along? Thanks!

Re: Dachshund potty training..

  • I've never had to transition from pee pads to pottying outside.  I would remove the pee pads completely, yes, your dog will still have accidents until he learns, but the pee pad reinforce peeing inside is okay.

Invest in big jug of Nature's Miracle or another enzyme cleaner and clean every single spot thoroughly (read the directions on the bottle).

Get Dexter on a schedule and start from scratch.  Take him out as soon as he walks up, after he eats, after he plays etc. Praise him like crazy when he goes outside. No punishment for going inside.  If you catch him in the act, interrupt him with a little "eh eh" and immediately take him outside.  Rinse and repeat.

Is he crated when you leave?  Does he go in his crate?

  • Yes he's crated when we leave and he always goes in there. I don't know how to make it stop. Sometimes he makes such a mess I have to come home and give him a bath immediately.
  • How big is the crate? It should only be big enough for him to turn around and stand up.

And how long are you leaving him crated? You might need to go back to treating him like a little puppy and letting him out every few hours rather than expecting him to hold it all day.

  • Well it's only over night or if I run to the store. I'm not working right now so he's usually out all day long. The crate seems to be the right size for him. when he curls up he only takes up half, but he's long, so standing.. he is the length of the crate.
  • Remove all bedding. If the pee is able to soak into something, he'll look for a dry spot.  Not fun, but my dog who would eat her bed had a "naked" crate for a year.

How long is overnight? He's 7 months old, has been trained that peeing inside is acceptable.   At 7 months he shouldn't be expected to hold it longer than 7 hours.  For him, it might be less because he's never been expected to hold it that long.

Be sure to clean his crate with an enzyme cleaner really well and then try to start a new schedule slowly increasing the time when he is successful.
  • Ok, so we'll be starting naked crating tonight. And I'll try to stay up later than my husband so I can give him less time in the crate at night right now we're at about 8 hrs overnight. It probably is my fault because I have never owned a dog and am sort of clueless, but I have been really trying lol.
  • OMG! I woke up at 2:30 this morning to Dexter barking like crazy because we put him in his crate last night for the first time without a towel and he mushed poo and pee all over and he was covered. I wanted to throw up the whole time I was cleaning out the crate. lol Please tell me it gets better.. haha
  • Potty training is really hard, so don't beat yourself up too much! It will get better.

When was the last time your dog had gone #1 and #2 before going into their crate for the night? When was they last time they ate and drank water?
