Men are supposed to wear white shirts

to an interview? That seems so boring. Is this the general consensus?

Re: Men are supposed to wear white shirts

  • MH usually wears a white shirt and a more colorful tie to show some personality.
  • ? Never heard that. Rob never wears white shirts. He hates them. He'll typically wear some variation of blue (sometimes solid, sometimes printed - he just loves blue dress shirts) with or without a tie (usually without since he always looks professional but his industry doesn't mandate them) and you an hardly say his career has suffered for it or that anyone thinks he's any less capable or accomplished for it...

  • Mike usually goes conservative for work, but only owns one white shirt- all the rest are variations of blue(a little too much blue for my liking) some yellow, and a few patterns-

I don't think you have to wear white shirt though-

  • Glenn has one white shirt, usually he wears a light blue or other pale color with a conservative tie for an interview. He also has a lot of shirts with a small light color pattern. Most of them are the Brooks Brothers no iron. And Brooks Brothers is pretty much as conservative as you can get these days.
  • I've never heard that. My husband's dress shirts are mostly blue and that's what he wears. He has never had to dress up daily (most places in his field are khakis, not suits, for daily wear) so he only owns one suit.

  • white or blue for an interview...especially where I work.

  • To add - as a hiring manager in a traditionally conservative industry (accounting), I would not think twice about someone wearing something other than white or blue when I interviewed him/her - I'm more concerned with overall appearance, professionalism, and capabilities than a (gasp) pink or yellow or whatever colored shirt.

This.  My firm is pretty conservative and I've heard them talk about guys not wearing white shirts for interviews - they prefer white.

  • Depends on the field. MH's office is broken into bureaus. Each one has some slightly different mandates on dress. The real official office rule is always a suit, but in some bureaus its more of an "always a suit if someone from high up is around or you are in court or meeting with a witness, etc". One bureau is strictly white shirts only. No other color EVER.

So, I'd sure as hell show up to in interview in a white shirt for that job.
