Goldie - Botox for migraines?
Can you tell me about Botox for migraines? Right now I take Maxalt and it does the job pretty well. But like this weekend I felt it coming on Friday, took Maxalt when I got home but still felt crappy.
Re: Goldie - Botox for migraines?
i don't know much about it yet - i'm just starting to look into it - and have a couple docs i need to call to find out if they do it--- but keep forgetting... mostly b/c this week (knock on wood) i have actually been OK migraine wise, which is a shocker b/c i was getting them daily for the past few months.
sorry- i'm not much help with that.... but there are many meds used to prevention - i have tried a few. Inderal (which is a beta blocker, typically used for hypertension) helped me quite a bit- but then wore off and to increase the dose would have made my blood pressure too low.
Topamax, which is approved for migraine prevention, but was orig used for seizures, worked well for me for the year i took it- but it has a ton of s/e that you may or may not get. Sadly i did not get the weight loss s/e many do get, lol. I did get the memory issues, tingling hands, and it messed with my period even with me on BCP.
I'm sorry I'm just seeing this now. I hope you view in bump mode. I started a new job so I haven't been on the boards in days.
I was thinking about you because I was battling a migraine since Friday when I posted this. I know mine are usually triggered by stress but I've never had this experience before. I took my meds (Maxalt) and it would go away, but sometimes I'd still feel off or have a milder migraine. This kept happening all weekend and up until yesterday where, miraculously, the eye discomfort went away and no migraine happened.
If you find out anything more about the Botox please let me know.
Butting in. I don't know a ton about it, but do know that pain management doctors (physiatrists) perform this, so if your PCP doesn't, that's where you may want to start. Also, it's pretty difficult to get your insurance to cover the cost of the Botox, as well as the actual procedure. Typically the dr will write you a script for the Botox and you obtain it through your pharmacy then bring it to the office with you although, again, the norm is for the ins co to reject the request....hen your dr's office has to appeal....sometimes it goes through, but often it does not. It's never a smooth, fast process though from my exp (working for a physiatrist).
Ive done he same as Gail....Inderl, although my resting BP was too low to continue, and Depakote (another seizure med used off-label as prophylactic migraine prevention), but the side effects were too much for me with hair loss and rapid weight gain (I couldn't zip my pants within two wks on it).
ZGL! It sucks, but I have found that using a triptan as needed is what works best for me (I use Imitrex). It rarely gets rid of the migraine 100%, but after battling migraines for over 20 yrs I am happy to just be functional. I usually still feel a little foggy and have a headache, but, again, if I can push through and make it through the day at work and with the kids, I'll take it!
Thanks S. I wish Imitrex worked for me because it's the only generic and would save me a ton of money. But I was one of the lucky ones who felt like I'd been hit by a truck (body aches, even my eyelids, weight on my chest, trouble breathing), so now I'm stuck with $$$$ Maxalt. It does work relatively well so I'm not necessarily looking to do Botox, which insurance probably wouldn't cover, but I'd like to know what it does/how it works and if it's a good fix.
Headaches suck because you can't always get rid of them. I agree, though, that the Maxalt at least makes me functional as opposed to sleeping in a dark room all day.
