Depo shot?

Has anyone else used this for bc? I had to get it last May for my Essure procedure and have not had another shot since. I had a period for 4 months straight, no period for a couple of months, and now I'm back to bleeding every frakkin day. I was told it can take up to a year to get out of my system but seriously? This sucks! Anyone else have issues like this with it? :(

Re: Depo shot?

  • Yep, I bled for four months straight.  Never went back.  I don't know what I was thinking.  Plus, all the scary black box warnings out now about osteoporosis and bone density loss makes me wonder how it's still even legal,

  • What did you do to get it to stop though? Did you just wait it out or have to get onto something else? My doctor didn't even mention things like this when we discussed it and when I searched online beforehand it didn't bring up that much. Then it starts and boom, I find it everywhere how awful it seems to be. I see how it'd be great bc though, hard to get pregnant if you never want sex because you're bleeding like crazy...
  • I had one shot at my 6 week pp check up after my last DD was born, only got it bc DR recommended it and DH was getting a vasectomy so we only needed a short fix. well, it was the worst thing I've ever done. DD is now 9 months old and I've just started feeling myself again and getting my bleeding back to normal. I had bleeding for weeks and then it would stop a day or two, then back to bleeding. never again. I can't believe they even sell that crap.

  • I've been on the depo for 2 years. I had to get off because of the risk of osteoperosis. They only suggest being on it for 2 years. I LOVED it I never had a problem. I haven't had a period in 2 years :) I guess its different for everyone.
  • I was on it for about a year, and had no issues what so ever. I just didn't like getting a shot every few months, so I got back on the pill. Had no idea it was linked to osteoperosis :/
  • I went on it when it was first out, and stayed on it for a long time (like 10 years), because we didn't know that you shouldn't.  I was the poster-child for depo, felt great, lost a ton of weight, no cramps, light periods... and then it all started going wrong.  I started getting tired, and I don't mean, I need a nap tired, I mean chronic fatigue tired. Then I started gaining weight and getting depressed.  I went off the depo about 5 years ago and I feel a lot better now. I think if you want to try the depo, it's changed a lot since I had the shots, then don't make it a long term solution. An IUD is a lot better, especially the Mirena....
  • I have been on the shot for about 3 years now and couldn't be happier. It was a real pain at first, I bled constantly for a few months and then on and off for about a year. But after the first year it was great. I haven't had a period in about 2 years now (I have occasional spotting but nothing more). I know my risk for osteoporosis but to battle it I have increased my calcium intake and started to take other precautions.

For me though, depo was the only option. I have a blood disorder that causes severe clotting so the pill wasn't an option and the mini pill did not have the security that I needed. It is also great because I don't have to worry about taking a pill everyday, all I have to remember is getting a shot once every three months.

I have heard that once you go off it it can take anywhere from 6 months to a year to have "normal" periods again. Good luck.

  • I had a month that I just kept bleeding and went to my OB she put me on low dose Provera to "reset" my system. GL

  • I never had a period but it caused some serious Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde stuff! After 3 shots I came off and it took forever for me to get back to normal. Not to mention how long it took me to get KU

  • I was on Depo for years, since I can't take oral BC anymore. I wish I'd never started it. It made me depressed and crazy, alternating with totally apathetic to anything. I got off it for sanity's sake, and it took almost 2 years for it to clear my system and cycle regularly and get pregnant. If it were me, I would look at just about any other option besides Depo.
