Bullmastiff had a seizure. Scared :(

I dont post here but I thought I would share. My dad was with London, our 3 year old Bullmastiff, today while we were all gone and he told us how she had a moment of shaking/thrashing/practically falling down the stairs and it scared him, London has some major anxiety issues (needs to be on meds during storms/raining/etc.), so I figured either she was having a bad dream or she was having anxiety. Then, just now, she had an all out seizure. Foaming at the mouth, thrashing, completely unaware of her surroundings once it stopped. It was terrifiying and I am very scared. She has never in her life showed once ounce of aggression and she was growling at my husband and I once she came out of it. I will take her to the vet first thing in the morning but I guess I just wanted to see if anyone else has went through this and what the outcome was. I love her like a child and the thought of losing her just kills me:(

  • I mostly lurk and don't know what time it is there, but I would get her to the Emergency Vet ASAP.

Me too. 2 seizures in one day would freak me out for sure. Let us know how she is!

  • I would too get her to the vet ASAP. I hope they're able to help.
I experienced my dog having a seizure once. You're right. It's very scary. Your dog wasn't intentionally being aggressive towards you. She was scared. If that should happen again, try to stay calm and give your pup space & time to get her bearings back. I know it's difficult to watch & you want to help, but you also need to make sure no one gets hurt.
It was determined my dogs seizure was the result of a crappy flea & tick ointment I unknowingly put on her. She never had another episode.
Some dogs have seizures as a genetic problem. It can usually be controlled with meds. Your vet will be able to assist with that.
Good luck. I hope she's fine. Let us know how it goes.

  • Hugs, Nat. I'm sorry, dealing with seizures in a dog that size would be horrible. Don't think too much of the growling. I know that when a dog comes out of a seizure, it's common for them to act that way. They're disoriented and scared and just not themselves for an hour or more. If it happens again, though, make sure you keep the kids away from her until you're sure she's back to normal.

Definitely get her into the vet ASAP. There are different reasons this could be happening. It could be epilepsy, or it could be something as simple as her eating something toxic. You have to get it figured out, obviously, and get her on meds if the vet thinks she needs it.

  • I agree with taking her to the veterinarian. I have heard of seizures over crappy flea meds. They can at least do bloodwork to rule out other problems. I had a poodle mix that had seizures. The first time he had a seizure I took him in for a checkup and bloodwork - the veterinarian couldn't come up with an explanation for it so they just deemed it epilepsy. But, in your case it might be different. Hope the pooch is ok! Let us know how he does!
