Does anyone make cake pops this way?

I read in a friends FB post that you can just make a cake, mash it up, mix it with frosting and roll them into balls.. Does it work and how much frosting do I need?

I've never made these before and am thinking about making them for hubs for tomorrow.

Re: Does anyone make cake pops this way?

  • not dip them in chocolate? that's kind of the best part

this is the recipe I always use and they come out great.

  • That is the only way I've heard of making cake balls. Make a 9x13 cake and use an entire can of frosting. Make them into balls then dip in chocolate.

    What other way is there?

There's that cake pop maker, but I don't consider those the same thing.  I have only heard of the smashing with the icing and then dipping in chocolate, but they, IMO are the biggest PITA and I'd rather go to Starbucks and buy them :)

  • That's the way I make them. You can also buy the cake pop maker but I have no desire for another small appliance that serves such a limited purpose.

They do come out pretty sweet though.

I didn't think they were that difficult at all. But it depends on how elaborately you decorate them.

Oh and you need far less then a container of frosting. You don't exactly "mash" the cake. You more crumble it. Its easy to if if you break the cake into smaller pieces and sort of rub two together. Just put in enough frosting to make it stick enough to form balls.

  • I was actually thinking about rolling them in valentines sprinkles. I was going to do choc cake/frosting so thought dipping them in choc may be too much..
  • I would not use an entire can of frosting, they'll be way too mushy.  I also don't like using the canned frosting because it too sweet.  i usually make my own cream cheese frosting with less sugar, since they're going to be dipped in chocolate too.

I think they'll look weird if they're not covered in chocolate...I feel like that's what helps them stick together?

I dont think the sprinkles will stick. The frosting gets absorbed into the cake and it is more crumbly then sticky

I've only made them once and it was a couple years ago, so I am probably mis-remembering. They turned out great, so I guess I didn't use a whole can :)

  • Yes, that's how I make them, but I then refrigerate them & dip them in chocolate, etc.

I haven't made them in like 2 yrs, but I think it's just one box of cake mix & 1 tub of icing. (1:1)

  • I make them frequently.  I use about 3/4 of the can of frosting.  I have heard of people using icing on them, but, frankly, I think that's a lot more work and harder than dipping them in chocolate.

If you do decide to dip them, after you roll the balls, stick them in the freezer for a bit so they are more solid.  Then, take them out a little bit at a time, stick the sticks in (you can dip the stick in chocolate first - I don't always do that) and then dip them in the chocolate.  Because they are cold, they don't fall off the stick and the chocolate hardens more quickly.

If you want to see pics, I've got a few on Facebook under my mobile uploads folder.
