Broken toenail on dog, how to 'treat' it?

I noticed Laddie was limping (thought it was the arthritis) realized it was a broken toenail. I checked again a few days later and the nail was completely off. Laddie must have bitten the whole thing off.

I have been putting hydrogen peroxide on it every other day and cleaning his foot with soap / water.

Is there anything else I should be doing?

Unfortunately, he does still bite it but I am really resistant to putting a collar on him because that will stress him out even more.

  • Is it bleeding?

    Is it bleeding?

No, it is not. It did the first day. My main thing now is to keep it clean (so dirt doesn't get caked on it).

  • I don't know if this is what you want to hear, but I'd go to the vet.

A week ago, Dozer cracked a dew claw. The quick wasn't exposed a whole lot so I figured I'd just keep it clean and keep an eye on it. I didn't want to spend $50 at the vet to have them tell me to keep it clean.

A few days later he must have bit down on it because the quick was exposed and it was bleeding like crazy. I didn't notice him doing any excessive chewing, but he must have because he had a blister right on the pad, under the claw.

One trip to the vet later and he had to have the blister lanced and drained and stitched and the dew claw completely cut down to the nub. Oh, and despite my cleaning it out, it was infected. Time for antibiotics!

For the last 3 days, he's had a wrap on his foot that can't get wet. It's snowing and raining here so we have to wrap a bag around his paw, carry him (he's 35 pounds) down three flights of stairs so he can potty, and then carry him back up.

Go to the vet.  $50 is worth the piece of mind.

  • When Doby cracked his nail it also got infected and he had to have anti biopics and a soft cast put on so he would leave it alone.

I would def go to the vet.. We tried to avoid going and ended up making it worse.

  • I would go - you can ask them for a medi-paw boot to keep it covered and clean (and they'll probably vet-wrap it).
  • I wouldn't use peroxide at all, just fyi in case you haven't made it to the vet yet.

Peroxide is very drying, and although it will keep it clean, it will likely make him itch it a lot more.

Our dog lost part of a toe nail. It never bled like crazy. I washed it with soap and water, put bag balm on it, and put her collar on so she couldn't lick it. I only left the collar until the nail "dried out a little". She never really licked it or anything, it healed fine in a week or so.

  • Where can I get a medipaw boot? My dog broke a bone in his paw and we are looking for one. Did your vet give it to you? My vet needs to order it but we want it asap!
