Who do you call to fix a garbage disposal?
Plumber?
Electrician?
Handyman?
Re: Who do you call to fix a garbage disposal?
Either a plumber or a good handyman.
A good handyman will be able to fix pretty much anything. And I think generally, plumbers install garbage disposals - so they should also be able to fix them too.

but.... how do I know what is wrong with it in order to know who to call?
What's it doing. Or not doing?
Is it leaking? Clogged? Sounds like someone put rocks in it?

Its not doing anything.
You hit the switch and... nothing.
I checked the fuse - no issues.
(PS - yes, DH was home all week while it was broken and did nothing. I did not even have my coat off when I got home from CT yesterday and had half the crap from under the sink pulled out trying to fix it. Seriously, I'm thinking I might need to have an affair with a handy(er) man.)
Hm. That sounds electrical - but what do I know? I'd still call a handyman, though.

if it's making no noise at all, you might need to replace it. that's what happened to ours. DH spent a good deal of time with an online tutorial he found (not because it was so labor intensive, just b/c he's really thorough like that and could not fix it. when our handyman came, he spent 5 minutes with it and confirmed that it could not be fixed.
they run about $100 and are fairly easy to install so you don't need a professional plumber who will charge twice as much as a good handyman (assuming you have one).
Check for a red reset button on the side of the disposal, press it, and try to turn it on again. If it's just stuck, the machine will hum.
Then, look for a garbage disposal wrench under the sink. It looks like an allen wrench. There's a hole on the bottom of the disposal, you move the wrench back and forth and it might unstuck it. There's a video on you tube...
The reset button can also be on the bottom on the unit; I would bet, if there is not sound at all, this is the problem (it's an internal fuse). Also, just to let you know, garbage disposals are pretty easy to replace because the hardware is already there and it will cost a fraction of the cost of getting a handyman! All you need is a couple of common tools (screw driver and adjustable wrench), the new disposal and plumbers sealant.
Thanks ladies.
I tried the emergency wrench thing and the reset button. Nada. I reset the circuit breaker... nothing. When I flip the switch, it does absolutely nothing, not a sound, not a movement, nada.
I thought it might be somewhat easy to replace too but DH isn't willing to try, he's not all that handy, so I guess I'll definitely call someone. Stupid thing is inly 2.5 years old. Boo hiss.
Thanks for the suggestions though!
i wonder if something got caught in it and it that did that. thats happened to ours and i've had to wrestle what was in there out and then do the wrench and switch thing and then it worked.
From what you describe it sounds like it just burned out. What's weird is it should last way longer then 2.5 years. If it's just you and your husband, it should be big enough (power wise) to handle your needs. They are pretty easy to replace (we did ours a few years ago), but it's helpful if your husband is willing to participate. Otherwise, yes, call a plumber. Maybe look into a warranty on the device as well. There is no way that should be dead in 2.5 years.
