POLL: Grad School

My SD is graduating with her undergrad in May and is planning on taking time off, then going to grad school.  She needs an internship first, which is why she is waiting a year to go.

I didn't go to grad school, so I need some help understanding this.

Did you go full time?

Did you have a job?

Did your parents help support you financially?

How long did it take until you graduated?

Did you live home or away?

Were you super broke and wished you had some money from your parents?

Re: POLL: Grad School

  • Did you go full time?  Nope, I was PT and went a couple of evenings per week after work and even Saturdays for a semester.

Did you have a job?  Yes - worked 40 hrs/week.

Did your parents help support you financially?  No, I received some tuition reimbursement from my emploeyer and the rest was paid through student loans.

How long did it take until you graduated?  I went nonstop (including summers) and finished the MBA program in 2 years.  LOVED it!

Did you live home or away?  Lived at home, I was already married close to 10 years when I started.

Were you super broke and wished you had some money from your parents?  S and I were in grad school at the same time, we had just bought a house too.  So I would say finances were pretty tight for a bit.  I t was worth it in the long run.  We never wanted to rely on our parents for financing our education , especially at that point in our lives.

  • Did you go full time? Yes

Did you have a job? Well, I had a research fellowship, so I got a stipened to work on my research. One year, I also had a part-time TAship

Did your parents help support you financially? No

How long did it take until you graduated? 2 years (for a master's)

Did you live home or away? Away

Were you super broke and wished you had some money from your parents? I certainly wasn't rich, but as a grad student, I was pretty well paid. My tuition was covered, and I had my fellowship. That's one of the nice things about going to grad school in the sciences.

  • I have not started grad school yet. I probably within the next year or two. FWIW:

Did you go full time? I will probably take a class or 2 per semester.

Did you have a job? I will have a full time job.

Did your parents help support you financially? No.

How long did it take until you graduated? n/a

Did you live home or away? I'm assuming "home" means with your parents? I will not live with my parents.

Were you super broke and wished you had some money from your parents? This probably will not be the case.

Living at home while in school works for some people. My parents said they would help with my undergrad as long as I didn't not drop out or get married and I did neither. Personally, there is no way in hell I could live with my parents after living on my own.

  • Did you go full time? Yes, directly after undergrad

Did you have a job? No, I was fortunate that my parents paid for my education entirely

Did your parents help support you financially? See above

How long did it take until you graduated? 2 years

Did you live home or away? Away

Were you super broke and wished you had some money from your parents? See above- I've been very fortunate and my parents were extremely generous with paying for schooling and my living expenses

  • Thanks gals.  If my SD does an internship, she will not have to pay tuition, so that is no worry for us (thank goodness).  We are trying to figure out when (if) we eventually let her be on her own financially.
  • Did you go full time? Yes, it was a June-June program

Did you have a job? I worked a Sunday morning waitressing gig at a diner and did work study

Did your parents help support you financially? yes, totally.

How long did it take until you graduated? 1 year

Did you live home or away? I lived in an apartment over my grandparents home.

Were you super broke and wished you had some money from your parents? No, they gave me a lot as it was.

  • I'm not going/haven't gone to grad school, but I'll answer for my siblings.

Did you go full time? Yes. Sister is taking classes full time as well as working in a lab and doing lots of field research. My other siblings all went full time as well I believe.

Did you have a job? Only as working in the lab, I think she gets "paid" very minimally. If her husband didn't have a full time job they'd be in serious trouble financially. My other siblings all worked as well.

Did your parents help support you financially? No, never. Our father died when we were young and for some reason nobody in the family ever got life insurance, and my mom made very little with her job. We (4 kids) all made it through undergrad with financial aid and loans, and so far I'm the only one who hasn't gone on to grad school. I know all my siblings have anywhere between 25K (sis)-200K (older sibs) in school loans to pay off.

How long did it take until you graduated? My sister is still in grad school. My older siblings both graduated in 2 years I think, maybe 2.5 or 3 but not more than that.

Did you live home or away? Away. We grew up in upstate NY, mom now lives in PA. Sister is in grad school in FL and my older siblings went to grad school in VA.

Were you super broke and wished you had some money from your parents? We've all been "super broke" and wished we had extra money---but not from our "parents." Our mom is as broke as we are. and can barely get by on her own. She does medical billing and has always had trouble finding full time work. If something bad happened and our jobs tanked or whatever, we don't have the option of "moving back home" or "back in with the parents" until we can get on our feet again. We've never been supported in that way since we moved out at 18, and we all know what's reasonable expectations and what's not.

  • I'm currently in grad school.

Did you go full time? I'm currently enrolled full time.  However, since I'm here in the US on a student visa; I'm not allowed to work.  Though, even if I stayed back in Canada, I wouldn't have worked.  I will be working full time over the summer between 1st and 2nd year.

Did your parents support you financially? Yes, they are paying my tuition and living expenses.  Mostly, because I'm not elligable for American scholarships.

How long did it take until you graduated? My program is a 2 year program.  I began in Spet 2011 and will finish in May 2013.  Though, my program is different b/c it's a course based masters - meaning I don't have to write a thesis. I'm not sure how long thesis based programs would take.

Did you live home or away? I moved from Canada to NYC for school.  Even if I had decided to stay in Canada for school, I would have had to move elsewhere in the country as my local school didn't offer the program I wanted.  However, at 28 and owning my own home there is no way I would have moved back to my parents' place.

I not super broke, but it's expensive living here in the NYC. My money would go much further if I was living elsewhere.
