Petition to get Pinterest to limit the number of characters one can use in a description

This is a petition to get Pinterest to limit the number of characters one can use in a pin description. I'm so glad someone started this, because as someone who takes the time to create things it really annoys me when I see someone paste an entire recipe text or craft instructions in the pin, thereby making it so that people don't have to visit your site to see the full text. Re: Petition to get Pinterest to limit the number of characters one can use in a description

  • For a lot of the item, especially home decor ideas and crafts, I never click on the pin.  Maybe this makes sense for recipes, but not all the pins out there, especially when you can have unlimited comments underneath.

  • I ran across one recently that did write out all the directions and it went on for.ever.  I thought that was excessive.

On the other hand, I have clicked on more than just one to get to the original site and find it has been taken down, only wishing the pinterest poster HAD actually put the information in the pin also.

  • Thanks for posting this. I'm the one that started the petition.

The bottom line is, our recipe directions and craft how-tos are copyrighted material. When you copy and paste the entire recipe or craft with instructions, you are actively committing copyright infringement.

You may not be aware, but if the person who created the content sees your pin with full info in the pin text, they can report you to Pinterest, who are legally obligated to take it down. If not, they could be sued. According to their terms and conditions, you could lose your account over it.

The character limit request is my way of asking Pinterest to be proactive instead of reactive to copyright infringement. They already agree it's wrong - so why not stop wasting everyone's time (meaning theirs too) by stopping it from the start.
