Moving to Houston and need advice

I'm moving to Houston this spring and my fiancee and I are trying to find a nice apartment/house for rent in a good area. He'll be working for the most part in Baytown to begin and possible the Woodlands later. We currently live in Indianapolis so we don't really have any idea where the nicer areas are or where a good place to start looking would be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Moving to Houston and need advice

  • What defines an area as "nice" for you?  Are you looking for a more urban or suburban area?  Nice shopping, more than just chain restaurants, nightlife?

Baytown and The Woodlands are worlds apart, in aspects such as lifestyle and cost of living as well as distance.  I currently live in Baytown and it's most definitely not considered the "nice" area.  I don't even consider it a part of Houston since it is 30 miles away.  I would definitely say it is a blue collar, industrial area.  There is no up scale shopping, restaurants, groceries, or night life.  You have to be willing to drive at least 30 minutes for that if you choose to live in Baytown.

  • I'm looking for more of a suburban area that's close to a lot of restaraunts and some shopping. Nightlife isn't a big concern for me I'm more interested in an area with a lower crime rate that's close to a highway.
  • Hi.. We live in the Spring/Woodlands area which is a very nice part of town and close by the mall, shopping, restaraunts, and entertainment. However it is a drive to Baytown..at least over an hour if you take the Beltway. There is a nice area that is developing off of Beltway 8 heading North from the east part of town which will put you closer to Baytown and not as far out as the Woodlands.

Also depends on your budget as well. The nicer areas are pricier..I would do an apartment/town home search.  You can also use har.com and search for town homes for lease and look at the price ranges and areas and how big they are.

  • I don't have any tips about where to live (as I'm pretty new to Houston) but I used a FANTASTIC rental agency (free to you, the person leasing the place pays). It was especially helpful because we were only going to be in Houston for 2 days (we apartment hunted from out of town) I gave them a list of requirements (size, pet friendly, distance from DH's work, etc) and they found a list of places for us to check out. They had great customer service, found us some great places & even offered to show us around.

  • I would consider renting in Pasadena or Pearland, until he gets re located to the Woodlands, and then consider buying.

    Good luck!

  • Is the Woodlands for sure? Because they aren't close by any means and if you move closer to the Woodlands, Baytown would be a nice drive for you FI.

I agree with this. Pearland has a LOT of nice spots, too. Friendswood might be a good possibility, too.

Most of us here recommend renting first anyway. The city is so spread out, and renting will give you the flexibility to find what you like before you buy.

There's a ton of nice places around The Woodlands, but Baytown and The Woodlands are sooooo far apart.

  • Yeah we would definitely like to rent first until his job settles down a bit. He's on a two year rotational program for Chevron Phillips Chemical. I know that he starts his program off in the Baytown and that The Woodlands will be part of the rotation we just don't know how long or when he would be there.
