He had a bacterial infection on his skin recently and is still on antibiotics for that. The skin condition smelled yeasty, even though it wasn't.
He had a bath on Wed., and I noticed this Thurs. night.
I don't think he's rooted around in anything with pee on it. I have checked for cat pee in around the house and found nothing (which is somewhat surprising, lol). It doesn't smell quite like cat pee anyway. We've also watched him outside to make sure he isn't rubbing his neck up against his pee tree.
His crate doesn't smell.
I keep trying to clean it with "dry" shampoo (it's really this wet stuff you spray on and rub and then brush out) and with wipes, and it keeps coming back.
It's only on the back of his neck.
I'm wondering if it could have something to do with the antibiotics killing off the bacteria, but he had more skin flakes on his back just above his tail, and that part doesn't smell.
Re: Okay, now why does my dog's neck smell like ammonia?
yes! The vet and I were both really surprised that there was no yeast, since it smelled predominately yeasty to me.
Dandelion, I think he had his senior panel last year sometime, but the only thing he's had since then is the heartworm test. I hope there isn't anything going on with his kidneys!
He's going to need another week's worth of antibiotics for this infection, so I guess I'll mention the smell to the vet when I call for those and see if they have any ideas about what it could be.
