kellyann...or others re: Dyslexia...

Hi. I know some of you have experience with dyslexia diagnosis or learning disabilities ,etc. My friend at work wants to get her elementary aged son evaluated. She is not sure her school will and wants to save time.

She's in Wayne, any recs? if they are good she will likely travel some!

Also does insurance cover this?

TIA!!!

Re: kellyann...or others re: Dyslexia...

  • If she writes a letter to the school (addressed to the child study team) by law they have to test her child.
  • I was going to ask something about this too. As far as I understand a cst will not evaluate for dyslexia.

Hey Steph. I know they "have to" , I work in a school too :) but they have 90 days and should would like to get NJASK help if possible. Also since its later in the year it would be btter to just get it over with. He is having meltdowns, etc under pressure. If she gets her own diagnosis and gets a 504, she may have it in that timeline. I also think the teacher is not doing the IR&S accommodations as stated in the current plan. I know its hard with so many kids etc, but I think if it was more binding in a 504 may help more ya know?

    Thanks tho! ;)

I also find this to be true. They test for reading disabilities generally but i have yet to see anyone in my district say dyslexia. They will usually go under category Specific Learning Disability. If they say dyslexia, they need to provide a reading specialist which again not seeing regularly. Thats why i think better to go external if dyslexia is suspected.

  • We went to a developmental pediatrician at the district's expense.  We were fighting the label on Jon's IEP.  His label on the IEP pertaining to dyslexia is learning disabilities_nos.

  • We did not want to go through the school, I didnt want a label, or IEP or "classification" at this point. We went to The Lewis School in Princeton. Its considered one of the best. My sister and brother had tutoring there. It was a 3 part test, 2 days of 2.5 hours of working with Ryan and then a 2 hour meeting with us the parents. They provided us a 10 page report and recommendations. It was $1500. Ryan's case is mild so we shared the report with this school and the reading specialist and teacher work with him. I do not feel he needs to be classified as its not a more serious cause and I would like him to learn copng skills and work arounds.

Best of luck and you can PM me with any other questions if you like.
