Another Castle Rock girl?! Sweet.
I started out at Brooklyn Veterinary clinic- I found them to be very reasonably priced. The doctor is very nice, but I don't think she is very comfortable with cats. One of my cats got really sick and she needed a specialty consult- she wanted to send me to Denver but I went to the Cat Specialist here in Castle Rock instead and have been there ever since.
The Cat Specialist is an *awesome* place. The staff is very friendly, they have live in cats, it's the cutest place ever. I love the doctor as a person, but as I vet I don't know. I've spent over 6k there in 10 months, and have ultimately lost 2 cats (one 5 years old, one 4 months old). Could just be my cats have flukey, incurable illnesses. Who knows. But they are expensive. And it seems like they like to chase rare, expensive things. There is only 1 doctor, which I don't find very "safe". I'm in medicine, and I feel a team based approach is always better... bounce ideas off each other and what not.
I got my second opinion at the VCA Animal Hospital. I went there because my kitten had a horribly high fever one night after hours. I saw them on an emergency basis, got antibiotics, and the bill was still under $90. The clinic is a little "ghetto" compared to places I've been, but the staff is large and they seem to really care. I appreciate that they SHOW YOU the cost before they just do something. I got quoted $370ish for a consult with a specialist and an ultrasound, and it ended being up $270. They actually gave me the ultrasound for free and just charged me lab fees for some fluid tests. This trip would have easily cost me $699 at the Cat Specialist.
So right now I'm in vet limbo... we're waiting for the test results on the fluid in my kitty's belly, but it going to be more diagnostic and prognostic. I expect to put him down tomorrow. I will likely get another kitten at some point..... and I still have my sweet 7 year old Chewy... I have a good relationship with the Cat Specialist, but frankly I can't afford that kind of veterinary care and I have a bad taste in my mouth.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like you've had a great experience with VCA. We currently go to VCA and we feel like they are expensive. I guess it all depends on what you're comparing it too though. Back in my hometown we can get our dog's teeth cleaned for under $100 but out here at VCA it's around $300-400. Our dog has a reoccurring issue and they just keep throwing the same meds at him and he doesn't get better on the meds. We've found that if we just deal with his issue it will run its course eventually without meds and then we're good for 3-4 months until the next episode.
I'm so sorry about your kitty! I really hope that you don't have to put him down but that doesn't sound like it's very likely.
