Tell me about Pueblo, CO

I'll be living there for the entire month of September doing an OB/GYN rotation. I'm nervous about being away from hubs and the cats, but Brett works at Fort Carson which isn't far from Pueblo at all. Hopefully he can spend a night of week with me in Pueblo and I can come home on the weekends.

It's supposed to be an amazing experience.

Now.... Who wants to let me deliver their baby? Indifferent

Re: Tell me about Pueblo, CO

  • I lived there for two years when I first moved to Colorado.  I left a job I loved to get out of there.  Stick out tongue   Pueblo is definitely it's own little culture.  I don't know how to explain it.  It's just different.  If you're only going for a month, it won't be that bad but honestly, there isn't much to do there. Especially at this time of year.

ETA:  Oops, September.   That's a much better time than this time of year.  The reservoir and nature center are good for day outings and  the fair will be in town.

  • Who will you be rotating with (I am a PA here)? Where will you be staying?

Pueblo really isn't too bad of a town but I guess it depends on what you want. One month will be a piece of cake and you will probably be fairly busy anyway. September will be a good month. The weather is nice, there is the reservoir and the nature center and the riverwalk. Restaurants are improving as well. For a single person this probably isn't the best place to be but again that depends on what you are looking for (and you are not single so it doesn't really apply to you either I guess Smile

I have lived here for 12 years now, I am married and we are raising our DD and DH's nieces. We are not into the night life/partying at all. It is a good town to raise kids although the schools here leave much to be desired....but that is not something you have to worry about. I am assuming you are a med student? I work at the family residency here and we have med students rotating through frequently and the residents are pretty good about involving them in after work activities.

Also, Pueblo is so close to Denver (although Pueblo people barely want to to drive to the other side of town) that it is easy to get out of dodge and Fort Carson is a 30 minute drive. Pueblo has sort of a bad reputation because of the mill but it really has come a long way.

Let me know if you have any other questions...you will get plenty of deliveries here since sadly we still have a really high teenage pregnancy rate

  • I grew up south of Pueblo, but we were in Pueblo every weekend because it was the closest town so we had go there for pretty much everything. Like Wonderred said there isn't much there. Do you know which hospital you will be at? The north end of town is better than the south. The riverwalk/downtown is being revamped which I think is turning into a nice area. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • I'm rotating with the Pueblo Women's Center.... I think they are associated with Parkview Hospital?

I don't know much else about it.... Won't know exactly where I'm staying for quite some time- it gets set up for me.

I'm a PA student @ CU Denver. :)  I will definitely keep you in mind if I have any questions. DH and I are are self proclaimed "fuddy duddies" and aren't big into going out.. we're homebodies. I think this will be a fun experience.

Pueblo women's center is associated with Parkview which is a great hospital. I work for the "competition" at St Mary Corwin but had DD at Parkview. I am a graduate of CHAPA myself. Are you wanting to do rural when you get out? I guess I am just curious why you decided to do a rotation here (I pretty much did all my rotations here since I was on the rural track and lived in Pueblo). I don't know much about that office or Dr Roukema except that their US tech is really awesome.

Definitely feel free to ask me more questions if you have any. I mostly lurk here but do so on a regular basis...

  • The program is really short on OB/GYN rotations this year. This one came up and the clinical coordinator thought of me because I'm interested in OB/GYN and living (permanently) and working in Castle Rock or south of Castle Rock. I really like rotations where I'm the only student- I feel like I learn so much more than being one of a million student faces like at Children's. I can't stand Children's!

Even not on a track, we have to do 1 required rural rotation... I'll actually be doing 2 now (one in Commerce City... not really "rural" and now the Pueblo one.)

I'm going to PM you my e-mail and I'd appreciate it if you did the same or just e-mailed me so I can contact you directly if I have any questions. Maybe we could grab dinner sometime in Pueblo this September. I like picking graduates' brains, especially married ones with kids... I can't wait to have kids!

Off to study for a Dr. French pharm exam. Smile

  • Where will you be in Commerce City? There is an OB practice about 6 blocks from me out in the boonies here.
  • Salud clinic. Big Smile I'm going to bust a move on my medical Spanish!
  • Ah, ok. Nowhere near us. I think that's down by the soccer stadium?
