Would you call the doctor?

Alana has a cold.  She has a runny nose and a congested cough, but, not a really bad one.  She mostly coughs after she's been laying down for a while and it settles, but, it's not waking her at night.

She also has a diaper rash, with one open sore.  She has definitely had worse diaper rashes.  And, she heals from them quickly, as I'm assuming she would from this one.

Anyway, they just called me from school and said that with the combination of the cold and the open sore I might want to call the doctor.  I really don't think she needs to go, but, well, a call from school......

Besides feeling like a terrible mom for getting that call from school, I'm doubting myself and wondering if I do need to take her to the doctor.  WWYD?

  • ehh, how long has she been sick- for a cold, with no fever- I wait until at least a few days and no improvement-

    hope she feels better!

  • Personally I wouldn't call. What will the Dr do? They will tell you how to control the cough and have her tushy aired out to help heal the wound. Hope she gets better soon!
  • If she doesn't have a fever and is otherwise acting normal I wouldn't. Olivia had a cough like the one you described start last Wednesday (she actually sounded like she was losing her voice).  It took about 5 days for it to go away.

     Hope she feels better soon.

  • I would call just to be sure that it's nothing serious.
  • See, I thought the same thing as all of you guys.  She's had the cold for, oh, a week or so, but, it's really not bad and she's not bothered by it and hasn't had a fever.

I ended up calling and I'll let the doctor's office make the call about whether or not I should bring her in.  I'm waiting for a call back from them.

Ugh, I hate taking her to the doctor for a well-visit.  I really hope I don't have to go sit on that sick side with her!

  • It doesn't sound serious but I would call.
  • I would probably call for the open sore.  They can give you a Rx to clear it right up and find out if her school needs a doctor's note to return back....

  • If there's no fever, there really isn't anything a doc will tell you that you don't already know- saline drops, humidifier, etc.

As for the diaper rash.. if you know she heals quickly using whatever measures you typically use (ointment, airing out, etc.) then it sounds like she just needs some time at home.

    So, no. I wouldn't call.

    Hope she feels better soon!

  • I would call but I always call when the school tells me too because I feel like they sense something I didn't.  99 percent of the time the school is being overly cautious but I still call to make sure.  Hopefully they will tell you to just bring her in if she gets a fever or if it gets worse.  Hope she is better soon!

  • No I wouldn't-there is really nothing they can tell you to do that you don't already know of.

  • a cough is no reason to see the doc.  My pedi says only when it's really bad, keeping them up at night/naps, then they need to check and make sure it's not in the chest... otherwise it's just a cough.

as for the bad diaper rash - you might want to call for that... open sore? that's pretty bad - sounds like something Rx might be needed for that.  My boys get yeast rashes a lot in the summer and Nystatin helps a lot.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I'd call for the rash which I'm betting is actually a yeast infection. They can give you prescription ointment.
  • I'd call to ask him to call in a rx for the rash but not for the cold. hope she feels better!!
  • Doctor didn't think I needed to come in.  If it lingers longer, I'll take her, but, for now, she's fine and we'll ride it out.  I'm glad my instincts were right!

  • This happened to me a few months ago with Caleb. I KNEW it was just a cold. The teacher sent a note home saying he had a runny nose ( no sh!t, thanks Captain Obvious) Then the next day the nurse calls b/c he's in her office. "He doesn't have a temp and is acting fine but he's got a green runny nose" and basically tells me in so many words to take him to the dr before he can come back. So I grudgingly take him, where they look at me like I have 3 heads b/c 1. It's just a cold and 2. I wouldnt normally bring him in for something so silly. So we were in and out in 15 mins with a note (that the Dr. told me to tell the nurse to shove up her a$$) and he was back to school the next day.

In short, no I wouldn't take her to the Dr. until your gut tells you it's something more.
