Newbie

I am brand new to TN...today!  I am originally from Oklahoma, moved our family to Fort Worth in 2005 and now it looks like we are moving to Houston in the next couple of months.

my husbands job won't dictate where we move as he will be working ALL over the Houston area.

I know I want suburban but not too terribly far from everything.  Right now we live about 20 minutes south of Fort Worth and I love it!

I will have to restart my business so I just need a good thriving area or at least a community that I can access easily.

I know The Woodlands are out... we will be a one income family for awhile until my business gets ramped up.  So really, just a sweet community with a low crime rate and great schools is what I am looking for.  Thoughts?

I can't wait to dive into this board and learn all about everyone!

xoxo

  • There are so many different areas that you could live.  Houston suburbs are really spread out and very diverse.  I know it would be a PITA, but it's usually better to rent for 6 months to a year to feel out where you want to be permanently.  You mentioned TW - do you want to stay up north?  It's better to have some sort of idea of what area to look in, as there are tons of options.

For instance, do you have friends/family that you want to continue seeing in FW?  If so, living NW (Spring, Tomball, etc) or NE (Kingwood, Humble, etc.) would be a good option.  Do you love the beach and want to frequent it in the summer?  Then living S/SE (Pearland, Friendswood, Clearlake/League City area, etc.) would be good for you.  There is also SW (Sugarland, Richmond, etc.) that has great areas.  And a lot of areas out West (Katy, Memorial area) that would be options.  Not sure about what is East - but there are probably good options out there, too.

Also, do you have any kids?  I know you are looking for great schools right now, but sometimes a school district can really turn on its head in a short amount of time.  Even if you are planning on having kids soon, they really won't be in school for another 5-6 years, so you never know what might happen within the district in that time frame.  They do rezoning all of the time.  I have seen people buy houses b/c of a school district, then get rezoned to a different (undesirable) district shortly after.  Just giving you things to think about.  :-)

FYI - I live in Pearland and love it (check har.com and put in zip codes 77581 and 77584).  It's only ~25 minutes from downtown and only ~45 minutes from the beach.

    GL in your search!

  • Hi and welcome. Good luck with the move and I hope you are really happy wherever you land. I don't have any advice- city dweller here- but the board is a very helpful group!

You all are so helpful!  thank you so much.  let me see if i can answer some of your questions...

    1. Do we want to stay up north?  Actually, we have talked about moving closer to the beach if it is a good community.  I figured, if I am going to move, and don't have any restrictions on where...i may as well enjoy the beach :)

     2.  We do have kids.  I have one that will start middle school and one that will be a sophomore next year. So the high school is going to be super important.

I will definately check out har.com.

thank you all so very much!
