Moms who CD little girls

DD has been fighting some diaper rash since we left the nicu. I am hoping to move her over to cloth diapers, but for now, the only thing that has helped her and doesn't seem to hurt when we apply it is desitin. I kind of suspect the switch to cloth will help the rash, but DH is hesitant. Anyone have any feedback on cloth and brand new baby girls? Thanks! ;)

Re: Moms who CD little girls

  • well, we CD a baby girl.  the only rash we've had was an allergy to california baby brand cream.  all you can do is try.  any idea what is causing the rash?

    I love cloth :)

  • Mine are all rash prone in sponsors and mostly ok in CDs.  I'd switch to triple paste and get some liners.  Also try using cloth wipes and water.  Wipes can hurt.
  • I agree with south bride just water and cloth wipes for the first few weeks, DD just used water and cloth until she was 3 wks old.

  • I never had diaper rash with either of my girls, but DS had it when he was first born.  Once we switched to cloth diapers full time it got a little better, but it didnt completely go away until we switched to cloth wipes too.  Pedi suggested a mixture of antacid (mylanta or maalox) and aquaphor to put on it, because their poo is so acidic, but it didn't help.  Switching to all cloth helped.

  • too many people posting from iphones ;-)

We used California Baby and the Boudreux's (sp) spray for rashes. My guess is changing to the cloth may help the rashes too.

  • Forgot to tell say, the reason I suggested Triple Paste instead of desetin is that TP works really well but doesn't have cod liver oil in it like desetin (so won't make CDs stink.)
  • I still use plain water and cloth wipe for DD, no diaper rash issues to speak of. She was cd'ed when we got home from the hospital. I love BG AIO in small, not sure if they still sell them. It took her some time before she could fit in the one size diapers.

  • We CD Emmaline full time using a combo of diaps.  Some were donated (thanks to nesties who we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE), some were bought used (thanks to craigslist and hyena cart/spots), and a few were gifts.  We have a combo of prefolds, pockets, and fitteds.  All kinds of brands, some sized some not.  One size diapers won't fit till DD is 8-10 pounds.

DD has incredibly sensitive skin (like mother and father, like daughter, right?) and her skin looks best when she's in natural fabrics.  Our fitteds and prefolds are cotton/bamboo/velour against her skin whereas pockets are polyester fleece and "stay dry" so she doesn't "feel" wet.  The fleece can give her a little burn because it doesn't breath like the natural fabrics.  It's totally fine as long as she's not wearing the pockets all day (like when she spends the day with my parents who are only comfy with pockets right now).

We use cloth wipes (baby towels that MIL bought that were super cheap and not good towels at all so I cut them up into wipes) and a spray bottle with water in it to clean her in between changes.  We just spray the wipe to get it however wet is needed for the change and wipe away!  I wash the wipes with the diapers and then toss them into an old disposable wipes container with no lid.  I don't even bother folding them anymore (lazy, I know).

As far as treatment for diaper rash, we like to use coconut oil a couple changes a day as a preventative (especially overnight).  It's cloth diaper safe, anti-bac, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, moisturizing, and very soothing.  Also, we do about an hour a day of naked bottom time for things to air out : )

Good luck with them!  Oh, and stop on over to the CD board on the Bump if you have questions!  Those ladies know EVERYTHING!
