Vizsla...Anyone got a Vizsla?
I have owned several dogs throughout my life, rescued and non-rescued. My fiance and I currently own a German Shepherd from Germany and a rescued Black and Tan Coonhound. I am looking into getting a Vizsla as my next dog. I want something that you don't always see around here because I want to show him/her. I currently show my German Shepherd for fun and love it! I have done a lot of research online and have found that a Vizsla would be a good fit for our family and our lifestyle. Anyone here have any information on Vizslas first hand?
Re: Vizsla...Anyone got a Vizsla?
Vizslas are the cousins to my dog, a GSP, and I have been around a few in the field.
They are very clingy dogs. So clingy, in fact, that owners can never expect to go to the bathroom alone again.
Like GSPs, they whine. A lot. So be prepared for that.
They are also very active dogs and will find themselves a way to stay busy, even if that means getting into trouble.
There are some terrific V breeders out there and some bad ones. Feel free to post the name of the breeder when it comes time (should you decide to get a V) and we can run it by the girls who know to see if it is a good one.
Are you planning on hunting your V at all?
I hadn't planned on hunting because there aren't really any people in my area who do. So it's tough coming by someone to teach me. I plan on doing conformation, obedience, rally and agility though. I would also like to join our local therapy group.
From what I have read they seem to have an energy level close to coonhounds and are fairly similar. As I stated we have a coonhound and he makes lots of noise and is clingy but not as clingy as my GSD. I have seen some videos on the V's clinginess and seems like something I can handle.
It may be a couple years before I actually one. But I like to put lots of research and thought into it before I commit. I thought about getting a GSD for well over a year before I actually got one.
One of our regular posters, Pupasaurus, who owns a V posted about her experiences in this thread:

I just read what she wrote about Doug.
"has the attention span of a fruit fly." had me cracking up.
Seriously, I love Doug. LOVE!!
2009!! Is that Max in a snuggie??
Also I LOVE LOVE LOVE when Doug got skunked. OMG.
We have a Vizsla. As a 4 year old he is perfect! Years 1-3 were challenging! They are very high energy which was great for my workout routine because there was no living with him if he didn't get a good run in at least once a day. One trick to our sanity was swimming. He LOVES to swim and it burned up enough energy to keep all of us sane! We have a lot of room to let him run which is also crucial.
He is very clingy- I've heard them called Velcro dogs. He literally wants to be touching me all the time. He even sits or lays on my feet when I do the dishes.
If you want a love bug that snuggles no one beats a Vizsla. He LOVES to snuggle! It drives my husband crazy.
He is amazing with kids and other dogs... really with everyone. I know Vizslas can be shy so we did a lot of socialization with him as a puppy. He just wants to be friends with everyone.
He is very smart and trainable BUT having a Vizsla, in my opinion, is not just having a dog, it is a way of life.
Hope that helps!
I should have mentioned a couple other things-
Our dog is named Charlie.
Charlie went to doggie day care for a while (there were a lot of thumbs up for the DDC on the post attached to this one). He doesn't go anymore because he was asked not to come back... this wasn't because he was fighting with other dogs or anything. It was because he started climbing and jumping the fences that separated the areas the dogs were kept. He just wanted to visit everyone! (We found another DDC that fit better- aka bigger fences- and Charlie still goes there from time to time!)
Not long after the DDC incident we were visiting my parents. Their neighbors have two labs Charlie loves to play with. They have a 4 ft fence around their yard with a gate I would open to let Charlie in to play. This one day the dogs came outside and before I could open the gate for Charlie he jumped up, hooked his front paws over the fence, and pushed off with his back legs once. He was over the fence in no time. This became a regular occurrence. Now when at my parents he hops over the fence when he wants to play with his friends and back over when he is done!
The moral of the story being- even if you have a fenced back yard it may not work with a Vizsla...
Charlie doesn't go to daycare all the time now because about a year and a half ago we got him a kitten... Well, we got a kitten. They are best friends. If Charlie isn't snuggling with me he is usually snuggling with the cat. Charlie hasn't been in his crate since we got the dog. The two seem to keep each other out of trouble during the day.
Are the labs' owners aware of and okay with this?
