potty training

I need some Nestie advice -
1 - please recommend a good potty chair, and
2 - please recommend the best book/website/etc for advice on how to do this.

I had absolutely no intention of starting this until after DS turned 2.  However, he's been giving us some strong signals that he is interested, so I guess we're going to buy a potty chair next Monday (after a weekend trip) to see how it goes.

Re: potty training

    2. I read the Dr. Phil method. Per the advice of others though, what really worked the best was letting the kiddo run around naked for a few days.  Good luck!

  • We started using the Babj Bjorn potty seat as it worked well for boys but then Blake ended up really liking a basic potty chair that a friend gave us so we used a combo of both.

I did a 3-day "bootcamp" with Blake when DH was outof town...the longest three days ever but we basically woke up on a friday morning and said okay no more diapers and introduced the potty seat and underwear (which he had picked out earlier that week) and off we went.  Basically had a timer where I put him on the potty every 20-30 minutes initlaly, stayed home the entire time, always close to bathroom, let him have accidents in his underwear, etc...had to clean up a few accidents on caarpet but most were on wood floor so just scrubbed the floor good and no biggie.  After a few accidents he did really good- his biggest issue was actually going on the potty...kept wanting to hold it. once he realized it didn't hurt it was good!  We did the reward sticker thing for each time, gave m&m's...whatever it took!  By Monday he was at daycare with just underwear and I think he on;y had one accident each day those first few days...it was a VERY long three days but it worked so well for us...a fellow Nestis helped me with this approach and it was great for Blake...but each child is different.

I should add that Blake watched the Elmo dvd about potty-training a few times before and I had bought hima book about it...and we never put another diaper on him after that day...not at night, just underwear...never did pullups...just used those plasticy diaper covers for any nighttime accident but he only had 1-2 of those...have never had nighttime issues and he was waking up dry most of the time before we did this...

    Sorry for the novel!

The running around naked is essentially what we did but with underwear on and putting him on the potty on a regular interval!

My daycare lady, who's been at it for 25 years, insists that this is the best approach. She told us that if we did this, then come Monday she will keep at it, putting him on has much as possible, and she said that mid-week they are usually completely trained. It's probably what we are going to do when the time comes. He's all about chillin' on the potty, and his new one is that he likes to wipe his wiener (i imagine cause he sees the kids at daycare doing it?), but I can't remember the last time he actually went potty on it, regardless of the times when he said "I wee wee" or "i go potty". Who knows. We are going to try to put it off until this summer after our trip to PA, unless he's seriously ready before then. I don't really want to deal with a potty training toddler on the airplane if I don't have too! :)

  • I am really intrigued by this Dr. Phil method (it almost seems fool proof), but dang, how do you people deal with the pee/god knows what else all over your floors?  That makes me want to vom.

Really? Your kid poops in the tub? A kid peeing on the floor is no worse than an animal having an accident or potty training a puppy.

  • H just turned 2 this week and has woken up dry in the morning for 3 days!

Both girls were different... K was interested but wasn't too serious.  We started her and she got the hang of it right around 2ish... then H was born.  She regressed and I didn't have her potty trained until she was 2.5 or so.  She preferred the little potty chair (Target, did not like the frog one, this one was blue and white with a flush song and dance)

H prefers to sit on the toilet like her sister and wants to sit on this Dora ring which goes directly on the toilet.   I put her in princess pull ups and the diaper / pull up talks to her.   "Hi, H this is Belle, please don't pee on me"  or H, this is tigger, I appreciate it if you pooped into the potty and not on me.    I haven't done the underwear thing with her yet partially because I am too lazy.

K I did a mix of her being naked and in her underwear.  She was scared of big toilets so if we were at a store, she would not go and would just cry if I tried to sit her on a big toilet.

I've read having parent of same sex with an open door and the kid allowed to go in and see has helped.

Have you had the stomach flu hit your house yet before the age they can hit a bucket?   Good times.... lots of carpet cleaner, towels, and disinfecting.

  • Does this work if your kid isn't very verbal yet?  I'm not sure if Blythe is interested enough yet or not (she's only 20 months...what constitutes interest?  she's aware when she poops and signals to me she needs to be changed, but not much for peeing).   We got the potty out to at least familiarize her with it for the future.  She doesn't have a ton of consistent words, so I doubt she could verbally tell us she needs to go potty for a while...we'd just have to ask her a lot and wait for her to sign yes or please.

ah yeah, BIG difference!  In the tub you just pull a gallon ziplock over your hand/arm and swiffer it out.  But pee on my carpet?  Multiple times a day? With a kid who will probably not tell me when it's happening?  No.

This is about the only thing that works for me right now.  If I'm like, "come on, let's go potty!" and we can both go at the same time (lol) then she's pretty into it and will usually be able to go.

I think we only had 1-2 carpet accidents the entire time.  I kept him on the wood floor for easy clean up and sanitizing

That's not really an option for me.. about 80% of my house is carpeted. :  Still, I'm intrigued enough to give it a shot..

Oh, gotcha!  About 2/3 of our main floor is wood so it was easier in that regard...but really when I was having him go on times intervals like I did he really didn't have many real accidents...seriously maybe a couple on carpet and a couple on the wood floor...all in all totally worth it!

Yeah, I'll let you know on that one... We are planning to really do the pt "push" in a couple of weeks-he goes on it occasionally now, nothing consistent. This weekend we get to tackle the toddler bed transition sInce we have caught him plankIng on the top rail twice this week.

  • I might try this naked method one of these weekends when we dont have anything going on.  Audrey showed "signs" of being interested about 6 months ago, and that's when we introduced the potty.  She'd go, but only if we put her on it.. she'd never willingly say she needed to go.  Then about a month ago I did the whole sticker chart thing, but you can tell she's just not into it.  Now everyone is telling me DON'T push, and that she'll just do it when she's ready... there are so many darn theories out there, who knows.  I'm laying off it for awhile though.

This was our experience to a T; Jack showed signs way early (1 1/2 or so) and I thought, "Holla, genius baby!"  But yeah, then he moved on and stayed in diapers.  I was in no rush.

In the car, during a 10-hour car trip, 5 months before turning 3, "I gotta peeeeeeeee!"  Um, go in your diaper, homeboy.  Nope, he wanted to go "on da potty."  We stopped at a rest area (barftastic) and he went.  A few hours later, we stopped for lunch, and he went again.  The rest is, truly, history.  He's had two accidents since then, both of which happened while playing with his favorite grandma (and didn't want to stop for the break).

Obviously every experience will be different, but I don't regret waiting because, with Jack at least, I didn't have to do a DAMN thing. :)

Now where IS CoriA with her prodigy?!

  • K showed lots of interest around 22 months, but she was not fully trained until I did a 3 day potty training when she was 2 months shy of 3.  That's when it clicked.  I tried the 3 day potty training a couple months earlier and it did not work (right after I had B, so could have been a factor).  Every child is different, but they do say boys are slower to train.  B has been showing signs for a while, but he just likes to sit on it.  I won't push it for a while, maybe 2.5?  I'm in less of a rush and he will do it when he's ready, I don't have 2 in diapers this time around.

I had quite few pee accidents with K, but it's not terrible for clean up.  Potty training is the most frustrating time ever.  If he's showing signs, I would definitely introduce it and see what he thinks!  GL!

  • Boystown pediatrics has a lot of parent sessions that are free, I believe I heard on the radio that they have one coming up.  That's where I got my PT info.  The biggest things I gathered from that were that children learn best by imitation and that if you wait long enough, a child will eventually potty train themselves.  I tried a couple of different times, but had lots of accidents, so I didn't push it.  I put a potty chair in the bathroom (safety 1st, or something - I like it because we also use it as a step stool for the sink) and he would sit on it while I went potty.  Then on his 3rd birthday, I told him that he was no longer going to wear diapers (we were going on a Disney cruise and he needed to be potty trained to go to the kids club).  The rest was history, he's only had a handful of accidents - mainly at nap time, so we put him back in diapers for nap/bedtime.  But it was easy peasy!
