What do I need for an overnight house guest?

We're having our first OOT friend stay over our new house and I'm convinced I'm forgetting something important that I need to pick up. She's coming into town for a bridal shower that I'm hosting so it'll only be one night. I have all the bedding for her, the guest bath is crystal clean and I have towels. What else do I need? There's no shampoo, etc in that shower- should I pick up travel sizes for her or maybe a loofa/fancy body wash?

What do you normally give to an overnight guest in your house? Anything?

Re: What do I need for an overnight house guest?

  • Towel, washcloth, clean sheets on the bed... I wouldn't go out and buy shampoo/conditioner specifically for the person, if I had an extra bottle I'd put it in there otherwise just use mine if she doesn't bring her own.

  • When my best friend came to stay with us, I had towels out for her and bought a bottle of conditioner for her because I don't use it... lol. I also asked her what she likes to drink/snack on, but she was here for 3 nights. Have fun!

  • I would love to see how people respond considering we are having 11 house guests this weekend, lol!!

In the past, I always put out clean towels (either in the bathroom or on the bed for them), obviously clean sheets, extra blankets (when its not 11 people), and make sure the clock is set in the guest room (cause its never right). In the bathroom, I usually have a bar/bottle of body wash, lotion and toothpaste. I don't generally worry about shampoo. I wouldn't worry about a loofa; i'm not sure i'd want to use someone elses loofa. You could put a bottle of water in the room.

I also make sure the house is stocked with food & drinks. Coffee, OJ, Milk, eggs, cheese sticks, pretzels, dip, easy to grab fruit--grapes, apples, oranges, carrots, and of course wine/beer/soda.

I plan to make some sort of breakfast casserole since I will have a house full and then maybe a taco bar or chili one night for dinner. Muffins/scones would be nice to have on hand for breakfast.

  • We're also expecting our first-ever overnight guests in a few weeks, so I've been keeping a list (I love lists! lol). We're all going to a friend's wedding and the OOT hotel is right by our house, so we invited them to stay with us rather than pay for a room.

Here's what I have so far:

    * clean the bathroom and guest room extra-well, and put up a fresh shower curtain liner and a new bar of soap

    * put out fresh towels/washcloths (I personally wouldn't use someone else's loofah)

    * make sure there's enough toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, and Kleenex; leave the aspirin, hair dryer and extra toilet paper in plain sight; empty the bathroom wastebasket ahead of time; leave the plunger behind the toilet

    * freshly washed sheets on the guest bed, and extra pillows/blankets if available. Maybe leave some cups on the night table (with coasters if you prefer them) or kitchen counter, or tell them where the cups are in the cabinet, in case they want a drink of water during the night. I got some new PJs for Christmas that don't fit, so I keep them in the guest room closet in case someone unexpectedly needs to stay the night and needs PJs.

    * snacks for when we get home after the wedding, if everyone wants to stay up (chips, soda, beer)

    * stuff for breakfast the next morning (eggs, milk, coffee, breakfast sausage, stuff for French toast, cereal/oatmeal, whatever you'd like)

And I'll point out where the electrical outlets are in the guest room (they're behind the bed, grrr) so they can charge their phones. If I can find an alarm clock maybe I'll put that in there, too.

I'm going to watch your post for everyone else's ideas :)

  • if you don't normally have coffee and tea in the house, ask her if she drinks one in the morning.  i wouldn't get her a loofa, just put a washcloth in there for her and a bar of soap, and bottle of shampoo and conditioner. just buy whatever you usually use so you can use it when you need it.
