Moms - a sick kid WWYD?

Travis was at the drs. on Monday.  He has an ear infection and a cold.  He's been on zithromax since and dimetapp 3x per day to help dry him up.  His cough sounds like its getting worse - not sure if its because its loosening up and working its way out.  He no longer has a fever.  Of course the pediatrician's office is closed today so I can't call.  Would you wait until tomorrow to call them or take him to the walk in clinic he's been too before?  He doesn't seem to be bothered by it.

Where in world would you like me to ship you? image My boys - I am so screwed in about 7 years. What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull? LIPSTICK !

Re: Moms - a sick kid WWYD?

  • I would definitely be waiting until tomorrow and even then it's questionable I would call at all.

  • If it's not bothering him and he doesn't have a fever...I would wait it out. Hope he feels better soon.

  • I agree with Rachel.  After a sick appt, our ped usually says to give it about a week for symptoms to go away.  I'd only call if he had a really high fever or if he was really lethargic or cranky.  If he doesn't seem bothered about it, I'd wait a bit longer.  I always get worse before I get better.

  • This part of upper respiratory infections seems to be the same for kids as well as adults - the cough sucks. It sounds awful, it gets worse at bedtime, it gets worse initially, and lingers for quite a while. But the infection itself is getting much better. If he doesn't have a fever anymore, and is otherwise acting ok - it's not keeping him from sleeping, playing or eating, I would just wait it out. Does the dimetapp formulation have an expectorant in it? (Usually guaifenesin) If it does, then it is likely the meds are loosening up the mucus and his body is naturally trying to clear it out. If it's disrupting his sleep or he's otherwise not his usual self, then I would check w/ the ped.

  • I find the xithromax really takes about 5 days to kick in. I would wait it out... P has been on an antibiotic since Sunday and her cough is getting worse, but like your son no more fever and its not bothering her!
