Neat freak cat makes it hard to sleep!

Hi! I've never posted on this board before so I'm sorry if others have talked about this issue, and the search function on TN is pretty weak.

Let me just say, I dearly love our cat.  My husband dearly loves our cat.  But we also dearly love our sleep, and for some reason in the past couple of months, she has become a late night and early morning bather, in our bed, quite loud and very disturbing.  I've been sort of handling it so far the way I handle my husband when he snores, which is to give her a little nudge and say "Cat, stop it!".  Shockingly, she has not gotten the point ;-)  Has anyone had any success with either getting their cat to stop with the sudden non-stop cleaning or getting them out of the habit of sleeping in the bed at night?

  • Is your cat your only pet? It may help to play with her with a laser pointer, da bird, or other toys before you go to bed at night.

Another option that really helped our cat, was to get another cat, so she would have a playmate at night. Our cats still sleep on our bed at night, but if they want to play or be awake, they leave and go to the living room to play.

  • We kicked our cat out of the room when she did that. We'd pick her up when she started, and shut her out of the room. Took her a week, and she got the hint.

  • Can you kick Cat out of the room/sleep with the door closed?

Otherwise, as the PP mentioned, hardcore play time might help, even right before bed time might be a great idea. Tucker Cat out so she sleeps all night!

Another, more "time consuming" option (if you don't/can't do the above) is "kick" her off the bed. When she starts her involved grooming regime, pick her up and take her off the bed. It might take a few times though...

  • We keep the bedroom door closed when we go to bed. He used to cry but now he's used to it. He only cries if I sleep through breakfast time :)

Oh man - yeah - NEVER sleep through breakfast! The penalty is death by cat in our house!

  • Very helpful advice everyone - thanks!

She is our only pet.  We live in an apartment in NYC so another cat would probably make it too crowded, but I can definitely try playing with her more before bed.  If that doesn't work, I'm going to have to kick her out.  The only reason I've been avoiding this is we have such heavy doors so when she paws or head butts the door, it's loud.  And then I worry she's going to hurt herself.  And if she cries, it breaks my heart, but I need to toughen up if we want to get a good night's sleep!
