Update on A

so today we had another ultrasound and appt with the orthopedist about her hips.  I tried not to get my hopes up again and it's a good thing.  Her left hip is awesome and her right is still "so close" but not there and he won't let her out until the numbers are exactly what he wants to see.  I don't blame him at all and I am glad we are getting this taken care of before surgery is the only option.  He says we've come a long way from where we started so that made me feel good.

We go back in 3 weeks to repeat this all over again so we'll see how it goes.

One thing he said today that he'd never told me before was that this whole process can take 3-4 months.  All this time I'd been thinking taht every 2 weeks might bring us to get rid of the harness.  Had I known this 3-4 month thing in the beginning, I probably wouldn't be so frustrated the past couple of times we've gone!  Doc needs to help manage expectations!

I am bummed that now I have to make sure daycare knows what to do with the harness and that I have to keep trekking to Boston once I'm back at work, but hopefully it won't be much longer!

Re: Update on A

  • Awwww, I wish you knew that ahead of time too but it sounds like he's being very careful and has high hopes for her. I'm sorry it's an ongoing process though.

I'm sure your daycare will be great about it-- you might need to get a doctor's note for their records though. S's daycare has been awesome about patching.

  • Boo, I'm sorry :( I know you were so hoping to be done with this. I agree, the doctor should have told you it's usually a 3-4 month process!

  • Yay for good progress!  I am sorry that he wasn't very upfront with the time frame, but you are right: the most important thing is that he is being cautious  (which = best for A) and that this is all being taken care of now.

I agree with the dr's note for day care (ours documents everything!) and I would have very detailed instructions written for them just in case there is a teacher covering or floating who will be watching A that may not be familar with the instructions.  I am sure they will be great with it though!

  • That is great news but I am sorry to hear the doc was not more up front.

  • That really stinks he wasn't more upfront about the timeline, but I am glad it is being dealt with so early. I can't imagine harnessing or casting an older, mobile baby (yikes!). Does your daycare have any forms for scripts etc? We had to have forms signed by the pedi even for diaper cream, so probably worth checking into now to see if you can save a trip.
  • Super bummer! I don't know why he didn't tell you 3-4 months from the get go. Seems like pertinent information. Stick out tongue

However, your siggy pic has to be one of the most adorable things I've seen! Wink

  • Thanks ladies.  It's not like he chose not to tell me the timeline, he just never mentioned it!

And I emailed the director of our center to let her know so I'm assuming she'll tell me what I need to bring in with regards to the harness.  Luckily, there's not much for them to know - it's all pretty self-explanatory.  it only comes completely off if her onesie needs to be changed and the legs come unfastened to change her diaper, but it's all velcro straps, so I'm hoping they're fine with it.  And her infant teachers have been there like 20 years, so hopefully A isn't the first harness baby!

  • At least she's making progress!  I'm sure it would have been a lot easier on you to know the potential time frame up front though.  :(

  • So glad that things seem to be improving. We go back in July for Maddy's next appointment and while her hips are fully in the sockets the depth of where the ball goes into the socket is not as deep as it should be and if she doesn't begin to improve surgery will be our only option. They don't do harness or braces after a certain point.
