Nashville + somewhere else?

I'm trying to plan our trip for this July. It will be me, DH, and our 7 month old son. We were thinking about driving to Nashville but are not sure if there will be enough to do for us with our son. If we do go, we were thinking about only staying a few days. Does anyone have any recs for things that we could do with our son? Also, where is the best location to stay? Opryland, downtown, or music row (or are these areas similiar)? What is the weather like in July- I'm assuming hot and humid.

For the rest of the week, we would like to try another destination and we were thinking Asheville, NC which on mapquest shows about a 5 hour drive. Is it worth it to head here after Nashville? We have always wanted to go but have never gotten around to it. We would stay here 4-5 days. Do you have any other ideas that would be possibly closer to Nashville? We would like to stay in the mountains somewhere but I don't really want to go to Gatlinburg because I heard it is VERY touristy (although I'm sure Nashville/ Asheville are as well).

We also thought of flying to Colorado but I worry about the higher altitude and dealing with a baby. I'd hate to get there and he be fussy the whole time because of the altitude change. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Nashville + somewhere else?

  • I don't really have any recs for Nashville with a child. It seems like a pretty adult town to me. Opryland and the Grand Ol Opry are pretty far from the downtown area. We stay downtown or West End, but again we don't have kids. A lot of the bars/restaurants are in the downtown area.

You are a couple of hours from Chattanooga and 4 hours from Atlanta, and there's a lot to do in these places. Not sure about Asheville.

  • For things to do in Nashville, we are planning a trip there with our three year old and we are considering The Hermitage plantation and General Jackson Showboat.  Otherwise I just want some good food.  :)

We were going to take a week and do Nashville, Chatanooga, Gaitlinburg/Pigeon Forge, and Asheville.

  • Adjudi- Nashville isn't really known for its food... Sorry, but it is true. There was an article in one of the food magazines recently about Nashville because Gwyneth Paltrow has sparked quite a bit of interest in the restaurants and boutiques in Nashville, but after ten years of being here, we have yet to be overly impressed by any restaurant.  If you are looking for classic meat and three, country cooking (Loveless Cafe, Puckett's, Monell's), etc.. you may be okay.

For the OP, I think Nashville in the middle of summer with such a small little one could be pretty tough.  However, there are things you can do such as the Country Music Hall of Fame, exploring downtown Franklin, Opryland Hotel, Opry Mills mall will be reopened by then, etc... There is plenty to do outside of the honky tonks that are famous on Broadway and 2nd Avenue, but summer is hot!

Asheville would likely be cooler because of its location.  However, finding things to do there for four days might be tough unless you just take a few days and do some hiking.  You could easily break the trip up between Asheville and Gatlinburg.  Some of Gatlinburg (i.e. the main strip) is touristy, but there are some beautiful cabins that you can rent which might be nice and relaxing.
