What to make of this?

Got a note from S's teacher that she consistently skips the number 17 when counting to 20. She goes from 16 to 18. I've asked her to count to 20 at home and she skips 17..when I bring it to her attention and she'll say 'oh yeah, 16,17,18. But, when I ask her to count to 20 again, she misses it.

Not sure what else to do other than just reinforce it?

Re: What to make of this?

  • how old is she?

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • Just reinforce it, counting is memory so she has just not memorized 17.

  • i think it's fine. my daughter always skips 20 and goes to 21. and i know a few months ago she said something wrong (and had since she started counting, she just recently corrected it). eleventeen instead of seventeen i think. something like that.
  • the teacher wrote a NOTE about it at 4yo? Yikes. That's a bit much IMO.

Griffin used to skip some numbers... he skipped 15 for a LONG time- but eventually that stopped.  I never stressed about it - and his teachers never mentioned it.... i'd just remind him about 15.

    Gibby skips 5 and then a bunch more now all the time and it cracks me up... "1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 16, 17, 18!"  But he's a lot younger so I give him time :)

really - just remind her - don't worry about it at all... it's totally normal - even some kids in kindergarte will do that.

  • I can't believe the teacher wrote a note about this!  So what???  It is totally normal for preschoolers to skip a number here or there.  I would want to ask the teacher why I should be concerned about this.  Perhaps she knows something I don't.
  • Bella did this last year. We just kept reinforcing it and eventually she got it.
  • i don't see anything wrong with the note, it's good to know to keep an ear out for the missing number and practice it with her. depending on the tone of the note, but i assume it was just a "hey- heads up, may want to work on this" not "she's going to flunk out of college if this isn't fixed stat".
  • Yeah..I didn't think it was an issue...at least she can count to 20 lol
  • I agree: totally normal. I'm pretty sure it was 17 that Ali used to skip, too. She's figured it out.
  • I'd be kind of miffed that a teacher of preschool sent home a note about something like that. It's pretty normal!

  • Maybe she doesn't want to say 17 because it's got three syllables? I guess just remind her when you're counting at home.

I don't get why the note is an issue to some of you.

  • RP did it all the time until recently - always skipped 16! Just keep reinforcing it, she'll get it.
