Thrown for a loop - osteochondritis?

So it turns out that my pup, who we thought had a torn CCL, instead has osteochondritis in his rear hock joint. Apparently it normally happens in shoulders and elbows and getting it in a hock joint is fairly uncommon.

I'm all thrown for a loop because I had prepared myself for a TPLO. There's a certified orthopedic surgeon flying in from Montana at the end of the month so Summit is scheduled for surgery with him. My vet is sending his records and xrays down to him and we will have a phone consult with him sometime this week, and an in-person consult before surgery.

I haven't spoken with the surgeon yet, so I'm not sure what kind of surgery and recovery we're looking at. Does anyone have any experience? I also can't find information on if it is likely to happen in his other joints - anyone know?
