Blood in babies stool?

Ugh, today is not fun. Landon will not nap and is quite demanding... and now I just found bloody mucus in his stool. I have a call into the pediatrician, but I'm on pins and needles waiting for her to call me back... did anyone have this happen? I googled (never smart) and one thing I kept seeing was straining to poop- he doesn't strain, he poops like 5-6 times a day still and it's still liquidy breast milk poop...

Any experience? What was wrong? I'm worried and hate waiting for a call back.

Re: Blood in babies stool?

  • I'm sorry, as I know that's so scary.  It happened to my daughter at about the two month mark, too, and she was also fed breastmilk.  The doctor claimed it was likely a milk protein allergy, and I was advised to go off all dairy (which was tough, b/c even tuna fish and some pasta have dairy ingredients).  In the end, I couldn't do it and we wound up switching to the ridiculously expensive Alimentum baby formula, which worked.  Whether that was really the issue, I don't know (I feel every doctor is claiming every baby I know who has been born in the last four years has a milk protein allergy, even though "experts" claim it's not actually that common as it's diagnosed).  Interesting enough, as soon as she turned a year we switched to regular milk and she took it just fine...  I really hope you are able to get some help and figure out the issue soon.
  • As long as its ON it and doesn't seem to be mixed in, he should be fine. He might not have seemed to strain to go but most likely did and tore a little. Blood mixed in would most likely mean it came internally.

We had this problem all the time when Caleb was a baby and I freaked out the first time too. Try to calm down and wait for the call back. And step away from Google!!! Lol

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies- it looks like we're going the "no dairy" route :( Only for 2 days so far, then add dairy back in and see how it goes... I'm hoping he just had a random experience bc I don't want to stop bfing but I don't know if I can do no dairy for a year either.
  • I was going to mention that it may be a sensitivity to something in your diet - assuming you are nursing.  E had blood in his stool and it was a dairy sensitivity.  I was dairy free for 6 months.  It was hard, but it helped a ton.  Good luck!

  • It could have just been a fluke thing.  A had it when I switched her to formula and mthe dr said it was nothing to worry about and is mostly normal unless it becomes persistent or bad.  It only happened once or twice
