AW-ing my latest fabric organization idea

I have a lot of fabric...much of it is 2- 5 yard lengths, but sometimes we have a lot more than that.  I normally fold and store it in zippered storage bags that I made to fit my shelves, or on rolls for some of the longer pieces.

I really wanted something that I could attach to each container so that I knew what was inside or to each roll to let me know how much was left.  I needed some way to keep track of it, and thought back to the tags that they use at upholstery stores, that let you know how much has been cut off so that you know how much is still on the bolt, and decided to do it a little differently.

Ta da!

This is what I came up with....I can circle the width that applies to the piece, attach a swatch, write any notes (I'm thinking things like 'frays easily ' or the fabric content...maybe what/whose costume we used it on), and on the back I have enough room to keep the length measurements up to date.

I can either just use a big safety pin(s) to attach the labels to the storage bag, or I might see if I can somehow use some shower curtain hooks that I have as label clips/zipper pulls....we'll see.

I had planned on just writing the information on the manila shipping tags from the office supply store, but I wasn't looking forward to writing everything out 100 times or making labels to stick on and not liking the way that looked, but on my way to the register I saw the box of printable tags from Avery that were the same size.   They cost a bit more (okay, quite a bit), but there was a rebate that helped, along with the fact that they were printable....totally made it worth it to me.

Now I have 96 tags, a lot of measuring and folding to do, and no excuses. Wink

No, that is not jealousy speaking.

    Really.

    Ok, maybe just a little.

Oh forget it, I am super jealous.

Most of my fabric is still in diaper boxes from our move.

lol  I am not organized yet.....but I think this will help on my quest for organization.

I had started on the folding a while back, (after I made the storage bags), but I didn't get very far.  I realized that I needed a way to find my fabric more easily, since I kept messing up the stuff that I had folded every time we needed something for costume work.

Locating all of my fabric will be a bit of a scavenger hunt.  I think there is some in every room of my house except for the master bedroom and the bathrooms, and in the garage.
