is this breeder reputable?

www.seadogterriers.com

JRT tenant guy is considering an older dog from them. I really wanted him to rescue, but they actually look good to me? The show and test it seems. He got a great vibe from her and she is willing to deliver the dog to him (he met her and the dog at her place today).

TIA!

Re: is this breeder reputable?

  • OK, I know nothing about JRTs. But, the male they're planning to breed for the fall litter isn't even a year old yet! I know that little dogs mature faster than large breeds, so maybe that's not weird? I don't know, but he doesn't have his championship yet, even though he's done well in the puppy classes.

The female doesn't have her championship. In fact, none of the breeder's dogs appear to have their championships. They do have some health clearances, again, I don't know enough about JRT's to know if those are appropriate for the breed.

I find this statement under "available adult dogs" to be alarming: " To keep the numbers down, sometimes we have to find forever homes for our beloved terriers."

  • I know nothing about picking breeders but I will weigh in on the championships/titles. They look to be involved with the JRTCA, not the AKC, and they have a totally different set of events and titles, not the traditional Ch as in the AKC. I'm not familiar with the titling in JRTCA but at least one of the dogs seemed to be showing in the working conformation class which requires a natural hunting certificate. And the females are listed (mainly agility and racing) on the highlight page. It is pretty common for JRTs to not be affiliated with the AKC and they maintain their own registry. Border collies are pretty similar, with a working registry with ABCA and not much overlap with those dogs registered through the AKC.

Jackson: I used to be wild, like the wolf, and now I'm reduced to posing in pink petals for your enjoyment. The joys of domestication
Poe: Here we go once again with the "I was a wild stray..." story. Blah blah blah *eye roll*

    Thanks, I didn't realize this.

  • Yeah, the JRT politics are even more complicated than border collies which muddies the waters and makes it harder to come up with a definition of a reputable breeder :)

  • I suppose it is not always black and white either... I imagine there must be levels of "goodness" even in good breeders.

Some more details. She feeds TOTW and only good treats. She's bringing the pup to him for an overnight this weekend to see how everyone gets along. I've seen some of her emails to him and she seems to not be bad, at the very least, so at least there's that! :o
