To move or not to move? that is the question...

My hubby and I are on the younger end of the age spectrum and have been happily married for 6 months. We live with his parents currently and have been planning our move for sometime this summer/early fall. We are both financially responsible and independent of his parents but we help them with rent, bills, groceries etc. Both of us also have plans for furthering our education soon, graduate school for me and culinary school for him. Though planning to move has been in the works for almost a year, now we are not sure if we should continue on the path of getting our own place, or stay where we are for a little longer while pursue our education. my husband is very financially cautious and does not want to move until we're sure we can support ourselves. I think that we'll never be ready until we do it, but also understand his point of view. We have a great relationship with is parents and they are in no rush to see us leave, but at the same time, we do want that separate living space as a married couple. I'm just not sure if we can have our cake (have our own place, not struggle to pay for it, and pursue our education) and eat it too.

Thoughts?

Re: To move or not to move? that is the question...

  • If you can find a place that is comparable to what you pay now; or even if it's more expensive and you can afford it, I would highly recommend getting out on your own as a married couple.  It's a different dynamic than living with others.
  • I agree... as much as I like my IL's and get along, I cannot imagine living with them. It's important for you guys to establish your new lives as a married couple and live on your own. Meeting those education and financial goals are important, but so is being an independent adult. I don't mean that to be insulting or to say you're not mature, but I do think it's important to be on your own so you can grow together.
