What do you use them on? I keep thinking that I need to start couponing, but I really only buy produce and meat. For the rare times I actually need to buy a pantry item (flour, sugar, etc) I'd spend more on the newspaper than I save with the coupon. I've tried looking at manufacturer's website for coupons I can get without buying the paper, but I haven't had much luck.
Re: Coupon Question
I don't buy any of the bolded. TP I buy at the dollar store - the one here has angel soft for 25?/roll (in a 4 pack). Batteries is a good thought though.
Anything and everything!
For real though, I just used a coupon for a free eye brow wax and another one for half off a hair cut (at a good salon). I probably could save more if I really cut coupons and looked through sale ads. I also only buy what I need unlike 'extreme couponing' where they buy things to essentially make them money so they can use that money for fruits, vegetables and meat.
Krazycouponlady.com is an awesome site, if you haven't checked it out.
You don't buy shampoo, razors or tampons? Or cleaning products? How does that work? (I'm truly not trying to be snarky, but really curious how you get away with that!)
I use coupons for almost everything. Meat and produce coupons are rare, but sometimes you can make money off other items. For example I had a $3 off Kikkoman Panko bread crumbs, and they were only $1.48 at Wal-Mart. So I had 4 coupons, but 4 boxes, and had $6.04 extra to use towards other stuff.
You can get coupons online from Red Plum and Smart Source. I follow a few couponing blogs, like Hip2Save and CommonSenseWithMoney. They will post when there are new coupons on the sites, or when there are really good coupons (like those bread crumbs ones). They will also show coupon match-ups for certain stores. For example, they'll say that Colgate toothpaste is on sale for $.99 at RiteAid and there is a $1 off coupon in a certain insert.
Are you near a base? Our free base newspaper in WA had coupon inserts in it, and came out on the Friday before they were in Sunday papers. I would always go grab like 5 free papers to get free coupons. If there were really good coupons I would grab like 15 (there are always leftover ones at the end of the week anyways, so it's not like I'm taking them from someone else).
I feel this often. I feel like it's a lot of work for a little bit of savings. I keep all my coupons in this little file folder that fits in my purse so if I'm out and I know I have a coupon and I'm buying that product at least I'll save a little money.
But I'm not going to buy 500 packs of gum to get free meat.
Ditto this. I've been trying, but we just don't use them. Sometimes, I just don't even bother cutting them out anymore!
Right now I've been slacking in my couponing because I haven't liked the coupons as much. Plus with moving and not having my printer hooked up til this week has been harder. It takes a lot of time if you keep them organized and try to match up the best deals. I will stock up on stuff if it's free or crazy cheap. Like for a few months in a row I got 5-10 free Gilette body washes and deodorants. But H stocked up on the ship for deployment, we gave a bunch to his friends when he came to visit, and I've donated some of it too.
I wash my hair with baking soda and apple cider vinegar (google "no poo"). I use an electric epilator instead of razors, and I use a diva cup instead of tampons. I make my own cleaning products with vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice.
Wow.. that's impressive! Does your hair feel clean and soft?
It really does! Some people have an initial "adjustment period" where their hair is a little oily until it balances itself out, but I never did. It worked great for me right from the start.
I don't coupon as well as Beach but we get a Sunday paper for 75cents I think and I'll check out the circulars. I don't spend more than 15 minutes on it but will clip bath/beauty stuff-makeup and lotions are expensive! We also do tuna or soup, ton foil, bagged salad, rarely chips or juice. I almost always get the cost of my paper back though.
I am a couponing queen. With 6 of us, I kind of have to be. I save more than $300 a month on our grocery and goods spending every month. I only buy what we use, but I have a "stock pile" cabinet. I only use my coupons on things that are on sale. For instance, I use beef and chicken stock in many of my recipes. Every 3 weeks, Publix has them buy one get one free. There are usually coupons in the circulars at some point during that time. If they are usually $2.50 and then bogo, I use 2 $0.50 off coupons. My store doubles coupons for 50 cents or less. That makes the total cost for each box of stock 25 cents. I usually buy enough to last me until the next sale.
I haven't paid more than 50 cents for toothpaste or deoderant in years. I can get shampoo very cheap, too. If you eat cereal, you can get that for less than $1 a box every few weeks.
If you shop at Target, you can print coupons from their website. There is curently one on there for 15% off denim. You can use that on denim you find on the clearance rack that is marked down 30% right now. You can also stack manufactures coupons and Target coupons for extra savings.
I spend about 2 hours a week looking through the sale papers and websites to see what we can use and where the better deals are. I always carry my coupon binder with me. If I see something on clearance or an unadvertised deal, I can check and see if I have a coupon and if it is worth using it.
