Help! How to ice???

The medial side (inside) of the knee?? Every time I get an ice pack out, Cooper does everything in his power to avoid sitting by me....even when I try to hide the ice pack, then wait till he lays down before getting it back out again...& he pretty much bolts!

He pretty much always lays on his bad side...but if I try & roll him over more to see/ice the inside of the knee...he bolts!

Anyone have any genius ideas on how to get in my mandatory 20 minute ices 2-3x a day??? Yarg!

Re: Help! How to ice???

  • could you tether him to you - like when training a puppy?

That way when he bolts he can only get a few feet...

or perhaps it's TOO cold - can you wrap the ice pack in a cloth (so it's still cold) so it isn't  so bad/shocking?

  • Doggie straight jacket!

What about doing the positive reinforcement with his favorite stinky treat?

Oh yeah, I already do this....you aren't ever supposed to put ice directly on skin, human or animal....

    Good thought tho! :D

I figured - but just in case! Maybe a thicker cloth? Big Smile Or maybe he's just being a stinker because he can!

I liked the positive treat reinforcement the other poster mentioned.

He had other surgeries, yes? Did you have to ice the incisions then, too? How did you ice him before - is he just being a stinker now and not before?

(sorry - totally just bombarded you with questions!)

This was my thought.  Looks like you may have to choose between breathing and icing his leg.  :)

Haha, thanks! Yeah, he's just being a brat!! He did just get up & switch sides so that the left side is up...but I still can't get to the inside of the knee...Im not sure if it matters or not, as long as Im icing. ::shrugs::

& w/his 2 other surgeries, the incisions were on the outside of the knee, this one is on the inside....& I think he's increased his stinker-ness w/this w/each surgery. If I recall he was fine w/the 1st, then the 2nd he was like "guuh MOOOM", but tolerated it...to an extent. Now this time, he's like, Peace out dude! Im outta here!

  • Can you have him lay on his side?  I do nails and brushing with my dog on his side.  You could give a kong or something extra special to keep him busy.

Oh yeah, thats what Ive been trying to have him do (I see in my OP that Im confusing)

He totally tolerates anything else I do to him (nail trims, teeth brushing, ear cleaning, baths....) But for some reason he won't tolerate being iced! Gr!
