Sensitive stomach - food recs

Daisy has a sensitive stomach and I need to switch her food. She eats wellness now. What would you suggest?

Re: Sensitive stomach - food recs

  • What kind of wellness are you feeding? My collie, especially is EXTREMELY sensitive to chicken, turkey and other common proteins. Those usually give him diarrhea so they are given very sparingly. Right now all our dogs are getting Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream which is salmon-based (no chicken). It is also grain-free but the protein content is not too high as to cause diarrhea. It is a great balance and I know other ladies on the board use this food for dogs with sensitive tummies as well.

You will forever be my best friend. I can almost feel our hugs. I will ensure everyone will know (now and in the future) what a genuine, kind, loving person you were...I already miss your laughter and our daily conversations. I love you, Samantha. May 20, 1983- February 20, 2012
  • Cooper has a sensitive stomach too, we feed Canidae..& I've been mixing in like a 1/4 cup of a variety of Fromm flavors in w/his food 1x a day which he loves. Im not sure what possessed me to start doing this...Lol!

Do you know the Pumpkin trick to help w/upset stomachs?

  • She eats Wellness super mix chicken. She is okay for a week then has diarrhea. We give her rice and chicken or meat ad it goes away. We have used the pumpkin trick
  • I would try a formula that does not contain chicken (read the ingredients -- some "lamb" flavored foods still contain chicken fat).
  • the thing about sensitive stomach dogs is they are all pretty much uniquely sensitive. so what works for one dog won't necessarily work for yours. in general the high protein diets have a higher propensity for causing diarrhea than lower protein diets. Also upping the fiber in the diet helps with diarrhea. how old is your dog? how long has it been on this food? has it had bouts of diarrhea the whole time? what were you feeding before?

  • Our girl was sensitive to all the dry dog food we tried.  In the end we were feeding her Natural Balanace Limited ingredient, Venison and Sweet Potato.  She was perfect on it and I wasn't 100% happy with it.

That was the point I went with raw (whole prey model if you're interested in googling it).  After the initial learning curve on my part and her stomach acids building up, she's been on it for over a year and is doing fabulous!
