Update to my great day post... PIPs

So we went to visit the rescue to get our dachshund. It turns out the one that I posted earlier was adopted before I got there. But, after hearing about her personality I'm glad she didn't come with us. So, we started playing with other dogs. I am really partial to the long haired ones and she only had male long haired ones. So she brought them out. One's name is Dapper and he's a black/grey/white dapple and Coco is a white and brown/red dapple. We are adopting BOTH!!! Coco is very shy but they are a bonded pair. She was willing to split them up but we couldn't do it. They do still have to be neutered but it is scheduled for next Tuesday so we'll meet with the rescue to get them Thursday! I so can't wait to bring my boys home!!

imageAnd this is Dapper.

I'm so in love with my doggies!

Now, question! I'm not sure about crate training (I've never been a fan but I'm willing to do it if they need it) but if I have a big airline type crate, can I use it for both of them since Coco is so shy and like to be by his buddy? Also, give me advice about going from a 1 dog to a 3 dog family!

  • Aww what sweet faces! Congratulations on your new family members!
  • Oh my goodness! It is so exciting that you came home with two and not one! And they are both so adorable! Are you keeping the names? Just curious.

As for crate training - I was never a big fan of it until we adopted Jasper. He had anxiety when we were gone and would have accidents and rip apart anything he could find. Now, I'm a huge advocate. Dakota doesn't need the crate. As for your dogs, I would crate now until you know how they will behave when you're not home. I would think it would be ok to crate the two buddies together, especially since you mentioned they were so bonded.

You have other pets, right? How did the introductions go?

Thanks for the advice. Coco is very shy (shivers when you pet him) so that's why I was trying to see if crating them together would be ok. They haven't come home yet. We'll bring them home next Thursday after they are neutered. And yes, we have one other dog (he's going to kill me!!! LOL) and we plan to introduce them in the garage while the new ones are in the crate. I can't wait!!

  • Are they in the same kennel at the rescue? It seems to me like they would do well together if they're that bonded.

    Congrats! How exciting!

I'm not sure if they are crated together or not. Forgot to ask that. Coco is just so nervous that I think it might help him to have his buddy with him.

  • I think you'll be fine to crate them together if it's big enough. It will definitely help with anxiety. They are ADORABLE!! Congratulations! :D
  • Such cuties!!

No idea on crating together; some of the more knowledgeable ladies should be able to weigh in on this.

As for crating in general: DO IT. If they're still young enough that they haven't been neutered, you'll save yourself the hassle of puppy craziness going on in your house when you're not around and then coming home to find either something destroyed or one of them sick from getting into/chewing/eating something they shouldn't have. It also gives them a "safe space" of their own where they know they can always go to get away from things (especially good for when dogs want to escape from crazy handsy LOs!). It will also help with house training them if they aren't already; even if they are trained already, you're likely to end up with a few accidents from them being in a new environment, and at least the crate will prevent them from trying to go in the house when you're not right there to catch them.

  • Congrats on your new additions!

We crate our dogs together due to the fact that one has a lot of anxiety. It has worked wonders.

  • :::swoon::: I'm a sucker for a dapple doxie <see siggy>

As for the crating, I highly recommend it.  We crated Max until just about a year ago where we transitioned him to the bedroom only.  Too much space = stress and pee.

If the two are bonded, my opinion is that it is okay to crate them together.  No toys or food though.  I have a friend who crated her two bonded doxies together and the did great.  I'd start by doing it when you are home and if you can set up a web camera or a video camera to see how they do while you are gone.

Well the rescue lady said they are around 2. They came in with a big group of 17 from a breeder. She doesn't know why they were given up because they were in the best condition she'd ever seen for animals being turned in. And yes, that's why I'm open to trying to crate them because I don't want there to be any problems with our other dog while we are gone.

  • They are lovely! I adore the long-hair and think it's so sweet that you adopted the bonded pair. :)
