I am currently triple feeding Kaelin. So I breastfeedfor however long she will, then supplement (first with prior pumped bm then which formula to however much she will take),then pumping afterwards. Since she lost so much weightat birth, 11%, they want me to do this triple feedevery 3 hrs around the clock for awhile. Depending onhow long she bf's and then how much supplement she takesit has been averaging 1 hr per feed leaving 2 hrs beforethe next. I'm looking to see where I can cut some time downa bit. Do I need to completely clean my breast pumpsupplies between each pump or can I put the wholesystem in the fridge between? My plan is to have a Second set, in which I did at first but my first sethappened to be defective after 4 pumps. TIA
Re: Breast pump
Woah! Do you feel comfortable with this? Breastfed babies can take a while to regain their birth weight. I'd call milkworks, stat! If she is on breast every time she seems hungry (roots around, etc.) then there should be NO NEED to supplement AND pump. Being a first time mom (or any for that matter) is hard enough, then to put this crazy triple feeding on you? I strongly suggest a second opinion.
ETA: I say this because Owen lost a lot (I don't remember the percentage exactly, but it was more than 10%) and didn't regain for about 3 weeks. They told me just to keep him on breast because breastfed babies frequently don't gain as much as formula babies. I followed directions and he regained, just not by 2 weeks. No other health issues.
Actually even milkworks recommended this with Jude, he lost 11% as well. At that amount of weightloss, they don't have the energy to just nurse.
I syringe fed Jude pumped BM (or neocate when my milk hadn't come in yet) after BFing, then pumped for the first few weeks, actually.
Now we still nurse/pump each session (obviously not nurse while I am at work) at 12 weeks.
On your original question: I put them in the fridge between pumps at home, just rinsing them in the sink. I wash at the end of the day
I clean mine after each pump session.
Bf is tough at first. It does get easier. Ian would nurse forever and frequently when he was itty bitty, I felt like a milk cow. Now at 7m he's more interested in everything around him and continuously pulls off and is feeding a lot less often.
This is what I did too.
I highly suggest getting multiple parts. I think I had 3 or 4 sets, and I had a lot of bottles. I just sanitized everything at night. I used the sanitize cycle on my dishwasher. When I cut down on pumping sessions, I used the steam bags. Also, get DH to help. Since he's not physically feeding the baby, it was my philosophy that he could help with all of the clean-up!
I have 2 sets that get sterilized every use with the quick steam medela bags. I only pump twice a day, so that's perfect for me.
If you are looking for a 2nd opinion, I would highly reccomend Dr. Wilwerding in plattsmouth. We were just there last week and this week because our kiddo is a slow gainer, plus tongue tie, plus issues with me. She rocks and tries to do same day appts.
