lollipops?

At what age do you give your kids lollipops?

My kids are almost 2 and in daycare with 18 months up to 2 1/2 and we got a bunch of lollipops as valentines. I was surprised that kids that young eat them.

I don't think my kids are ready for them, I don't know. Am I being over protective? I am afraid they will choke.

Re: lollipops?

  • I want to say at like 2.5 or so.
  • I didnt give my kids lollipops for a really long time, like I think my son was almost 4. I saw a child choke on a dum dum lollipop when it came off the stick and almost die when I was a nanny so I had a thing about lollipops, I still do actually. I try to only give them the flat kind, and when people give them to us, I can usually handle 1, and they have to sit in front of me and I toss the rest.

I didnt care what people thought and still dont. there is plenty of other candy they can eat that isnt a lollipop

  • Olivia has tried them...like 2 licks. I actually sent in lollipops as valentines to her daycare not because the kids will eat them...but because at her age you're super limited as to what the kids can try/eat at that age. I figured that the lollipops would at least be safe for all of the kids in her room to try if the parents wanted them to. Her next room is a nut free room...They're 12 months - 18 months...so I guess we'll be doing lollipops again next year.

  • I let Danny have them earlier than I let Ryan.  But he only really gets one while he's getting a haircut.  Ryan's older so he gets a little more freedom, but never in the car and again, usually only when he's getting a haircut or sitting on the couch watching a show.

I did send in lollipops on Tuesday (a la pinterest, lol) to Danny's class at daycare (he's in a 2.5-3YO room) but I figured that obviously the parents could choose to not let them have it - it was just easier to do one kind of card for both kids' classes.

  • Billy was like 2 1/2 and Sammie discovered them on her own at 11 months.  I walked into the dining room and she was sitting on the middle of the table eating one.  Second child syndrome. "Pollipop" was one of her first words!

  • Lol I suck at parenting.  She was 15 months old.  It was Halloween and she got lollipops in her treat bag from my husband's school.  She walked around with it, too.  We were both there.  I have other hang ups, Lollipops just never bothered me because they're so infrequent.
  • I'm with Molly - 2nd child syndrome.  Travis had them around 18 months.

This exactly.  Andrew got it earlier by default.  He saw his brother get one during a haircut so he wanted one too.  RJ was well over 2 when he got his first and Andrew was prob 17 or 18 months old.

I gave lollipops in their goody bags for V-day at school.  We also got like 40 back.  RJs class is 3+ and Andrew's is 18 months+.
