Flameful: I'm judging those around me
My coworker just told me that he's marrying his gf because she lost her benefits at work.
My friend told me last night that she's pg. She got married in October and they aren't financially stable. I'm happy for her and told her congrats, but still have that worried feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I'm feeling a little judgey...
Re: Flameful: I'm judging those around me
DH and I considered doing this when we were both in school. We both had parents who disqualified us from any sort of financial aid but did not contribute to us, but we decided VERY quickly that it sounded like a horrible idea.
I don't know that we'd still be together if we had gone through with it.
Through my MIL I know a couple who got married to keep the man from lose his green card. He is not interested in women, she is not interested in men and he is about 15 years younger.
They just had a huge party to celebrate their 15th anniversary and they're incredibly happy with the arrangement. They live together and everything. They show dogs together and she didn't want to lose her business partner.
Remember... there was a time when every marriage was a marriage of convenience.
Getting married for love is no guarantee that the marriage will work. I don't know if getting married for love is any more noble or right then getting married for other reasons. It's maybe more socially acceptable in this culture. And it certainly is no guarantee of a happy marriage.
As for your pregnant friend, it's a shame that they aren't financially stable but they can work towards that, even as parents.
You're right. Marrying for love is actually a modern concept. Its just that this coworker is always complaining to me about his relationship. He really took me by surprise today. I could see moving forward a wedding if someone needed benefits, but I side eye getting married to someone you don't get along with most of the time for benefits.
As for my friend, I'm more concerned than judgey. I'm happy for them, just worried. He keeps switching jobs and she's going to stay at home. I hope it all works out for them.
All that being said, I know my attitude sucks right now...
