Another did you hear...

One of my friends on FB wrote about flags being flown half staff for Whitney on Saturday and I was taken away:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/nj-governor-rejects-criticism-of-houston-defends-decision-to-lower-flags-to-half-staff/2012/02/16/gIQAfFgDHR_story.html

Really?  What kind of hero was she?  After all, I recall her not being the greatest example.  I could see if she was a complete saint.  What's your take?

  • I think it's nuts. Even if she WAS a complete saint...she's a pop star, a singer. She's not a war hero, a politician or anyone who had any influence on the world.

  • Yeah, that's big news up here. Most people are rolling their eyes and don't get it. Just another bone-headed decision by our bone-headed governor.  I heard last night that he is vetoing the gay marriage bill that was approved by our state senate, so he is not my favorite person as is.

Honestly, this may be flameful, but while I'm truly sorry that's she's passed away and felt that she was hugely talented, let's be honest. Nobody has talked about this woman for 20 years, why is everyone suddenly acting like they lost their best friend and making her out to be some martyr/hero?

  • I agree with PP...WHY?  She didn't do any great/grand thing in her life.  She was a singer.  Yes, she was a very good singer and I like her music, but really?  She didn't fight for our country, she didn't save lives, she didn't bring on world peace.  She was an entertainer people!!!! I think people these days are getting carried away with everything.

    My thoughts exactly. Ridiculous.

  • I think it's crap.  I'm honestly very tired of hearing about her death...it's been media overkill.

Two cops that were shot came home from the hospital this week (one NYPD and one NJ) and how many people heard about them?  THEY are true heroes.

  • Half staff flags are meant for heroes and heroines who stand up and defend our country. I really don't like the negative outcry Whitney is receiving because people are saddened by her death, but I think this is taking it too far.

As someone who has a recovering addict for a husband, I don't think this is a fair statement. Her drug issues make her no less worthy of receiving grievance for her death. Do I think every television network should be all over it? No. Princess Diana was known for her philanthropy and being a...well...princess. Whitney was an incredible pop singer and blase actress, who definitely inspired a lot of the vocal talent we see today. While she may not have been healing the world, she contributed something to society through her voice...I think that's worthy of being noted.

This exactly! it's sad, but 5 days later, it shouldn't still be front page news.

Yes, yes yes and yes to everything all of you have said! What a joke, and what a slap in the face to all of the REAL hero's we have in America!!

  • I was never a big fan of Whitney Houston (and haven't been paying attention to the hype), and I'm not a big fan of Chris Christie either, but for some reason I can see his point.  If you read the whole article, it does say that he's lowered the flag to half staff for every fallen NJ soldier and police officer, as well as for Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist of Bruce Springsteen's band.  The flags will be lowered Saturday  for a "fallen daughter of NJ" who's had a huge impact on NJ and American culture, and who helped out in her hometown community.

I guess I am touched by that sentiment.  Maybe flag-lowering isn't appropriate, but I can see wanting to show pride in and respect for folks who come from one's home state.
