dog is up all night

I hope someone here can offer me some advice.

Our dog is up all night long lately - pacing, panting and whining.  We take her outside several times during the night and sometimes she pees but she doesn't seem to need to go urgently or anything.  No messes in the house.  We make sure her water bowl is always full and she has plenty to eat.  I just don't know what is going on with her or what to do.  When I come home for lunch sometimes she is so sound asleep that she doesn't come to the door.  I don't know if her schedule is just backwards or what is going on.

Re: dog is up all night

  • The behavior sounds like stress, or maybe boredom. What kind of dog is she? How old? How much exercise does she get?
  • In addition to the previous questions, how long has this been going on and has anything changed in your or her schedule/home?

  • Golden Retriever, 3 years old.  Nothing new going on at home.
  • Hold old is she? Have you noticed any problems with her eyesight?

Some dogs can start to lose their eyesight and still do pretty well during the day or if a light is on (they can see large shapes and figure out where they are). When they're in the dark they lose that ability, though, and can get scared/anxious.

  • Is your dog a scaredy-cat in general? Do you think something could have spooked her one night that she's still afraid of (car backfiring, fireworks, slamming door, etc.)?
  • I would do a vet check to rule out anything medical, then work on getting her more exercise during the day and a DAP collar to help with any anxiety or stress.

    Ditto this exactly!

  • I ditto the vet check.  Whenever a behavior changes suddenly with no obvious explanation, a vet check is recommended.  I'd have them check her eye and ears.

It does not sound like her schedule is backwards. Otherwise I would think she would be up wanting to play or something rather than seem stressed. Panting, pacing and whining can be pain, stress, nasuea or any number of other things.

  • I would agree with getting a vet check.  Also, increasing the mental and physical stimulation after you have the vet check up to make sure things are ok.  You could try rescue remedy in addition to the dap collar.

Also, in my house panting and whining at night have shown to be issues with him getting hot.  He usually sleeps on the cold tile in our bathroom but still get hot, so when the fan isn't cutting it, he will whine to go sleep downstairs where it is cooler.

  • Your 3 year old and my 2 year old are soul mates! Heidi just doesn't sleep that much, and really never has. She has been a 5/ 5:30am waker since she was 3 months old. I started paying attention to what was going on when she started waking me up at 12am, 3am, 5am, etc. lately. I realized that every time she woke me up, our neighbor's dog was going out (through a dog door) to pee and she was hearing his collar and tags jingling.

I've honestly resorted to giving her a calming treat, that is supposed to calm them for stressful situations or whatever, before bed. It has helped a little bit and seems to have broken the cycle a little. I run them a lot every day, and try to make sure they get mental and physical stimulation daily.
