DH and I are having our housewarming party next weekend. I put on the invites that it's an open house so people can come when they can and that we'll be serving hors d'ouvres and drinks. So far this is the menu I've come up with:
Buffalo chicken dip in the crock pot served with celery sticks and tortilla chips
Baked brie with apples (on individual bread slices)
Pepperoni bread
Veggie platter
Pistacchio cupcakes
Cheesecake fruit dip served with various fruits
Champagne punch
Bottled beer
Bottled water
Various sodas
Pitcher of iced tea
Pitcher of margaritas
K-cups for coffee, tea, and hot cocoa
Any suggestions? Should I also have red and white wine available?
Re: Housewarming Party
I don't know exactly what pepperoni bread is, but my gut is saying it's more bread than pepperoni. I'd probably try to do one other meat or some sort (the perennial meatball suggestion), shrimp cocktail, bacon wrapped something. My other thought is the brie with apples seems a bit redundant with a cheesecake fruit dip. So maybe do a beef crustini instead of the baked brie?
My other thought is that margaritas say summer to me. I'd probably skip it for wine, but you know your crowd.
Wow, I think all of that sounds great! I think guests should bring you guys the wine, lol!
Yeah, having both red & white is perfect.
I'm with 6 that more variation is needed. I think little roast beef crostini (you can do this easily with deli meat shaved thin, sprinkled with swiss, and toasted for a minute) would be a great sub for the pepperoni bread and more filling. I'd serve the brie maybe with crackers instead of fruit.
I think a little chocolate on the dessert menu, even boxed brownies, would be a good addition.
You can easily cut back on the drinks. I'd probably just offer water, wine, beer and soda. (Decide in advance if you trust this crowd in your new house with red wine.)

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Thanks for the advice!
The pepperoni bread looks like this:
So, I agree, I should come up with another "meaty" food
I also like the suggestion for something chocolatey. I will either whip up a batch of brownies or make some cookies. I had pistacchio cupcakes on the menu since I've been making them lately and everyone who's tried them loves them. But, it is a specific taste so I'll keep that in mind.
Thanks for the suggestion on the margaritas. It is a summery drink, however, we're in FL where it should be in the 80's and I was going to keep them out on the patio. But, if it seems too summery of a drink, I could always swap it out for something else.
Keep the ideas and suggestions coming! This is my first time throwing a party like this, and I appreciate it.

When we threw our house warming party everyone brought wine. We aren't wine drinkers. So we ended up opening a couple of bottles, but we still didn't have enough wine drinkers to finish it. I wouldn't worry about getting wine for the party. If you have people that like it, or feel obligated to get some, I would only get one bottle of each. A bottle of wine is kind of the gift to give a couple/person if you don't know what they need.
I would do something meaty as well. Meatballs are a good idea.
I think your menu looks prefect as is if you are calling it an "open house" - if you were serving dinner at a specific time then I would say, sure, add another meat dish. But if people are going to be moving around, socializing and sipping a beer or marg, I think it's perfect and everyone will find something they like.
I agree, no wine is needed. I would expect you should receive some from your guests if that's the culture of your group of friends and you can open some if you feel that people are wanting it.
Sausage balls are great if you are looking for another meat dish. Use the best sausage you can find as it really makes a difference in the taste. I prefer italian sausage, but just about any type will work.
These taste just as good hot as they do at room temperature. I usually make them the day before, put them on a cookie tray, and pop them in the fridge uncooked. The next day, I bake them right before serving them.
I like this recipe, as well as this recipe using Boursin cheese.
