Transitioning dog to sleep in her bed

Help!  I have a 5-year old dog, Sadie, who I am having a bit of trouble with at the moment.  DH and I caved and let her sleep on the bed with us for a while and it's just not working.  She's too big.

She has her own dog bed in the corner of our room.  This is where I would like for her to sleep.

Before we go to bed, we tell her "off" and she gets off the bed.  She leaves our room and either sleeps on the guest bed or the couch.  In the middle of the night she comes into our room, paces, and nudges us and tries to get up on the bed.

I know it's our own dern fault for letting her sleep with us in the first place, but I am so frustrated.  How do I get her to just sleep in her dog bed??

Re: Transitioning dog to sleep in her bed

  • I am no help at all, sorry. The only way we can reliably keep our dogs off the bed is to crate them. I sleep way to deeply to wake up and tell them to get off if they jump up in the middle of the night.

This is me, waking up five times a night to her little nails on the hardwood floor and then telling her "off".  I am about to just start shutting our door (and shutting her out), but I feel so cruel doing that!!

  • I have your solution!! It's not pretty, but it works! We put baby guards on both sides of the bed and used cardboard at the foot and told them to go lay in their beds...it took about a month and then they got it. Mine were 5 at the time and had been sleeping in the bed their whole lives. When we took down the guards, they no longer want to jump up and they don't even think about it. Like I said, it's not pretty, but it works!
