OK - taking a relative out to SF

My cousin (call him A) and his wife (call her B) live in Arizona. They met while he was in the Army in N. Carolina and have lived all around the US (Tennessee, N. Dakota, Los Angeles, and now Arizona). All the times they have been in the Bay Area to visit our family here, B has NEVER been to SF. She's never been to Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, none of it. She said she drove down Lombard Street once, but it was a LONG time ago. They are coming up for 4th of July like they do every year and we all, in addition to A's sister (my other cousin, call her M) decided we would take a day to go to SF and show her everything. Her main thing is she's interested in going to Alcatraz which the rest of us have been too (except for A), and Fisherman's Wharf. We want to show her everything, but I know there's too much to do in one day. So I'm asking you, my dependable, fun Nesties to give me advice on what to do that won't be too overwhelming. So far, here's what she's requested:

1. Alcatraz tour

2. Fisherman's Wharf

She doesn't want to go to the SF Zoo, which I figured she might not because that would be a whole day trip in itself. Any suggestions?

  • I am going to stalk this post since I am taking my sister and kids to SF this summer, and they have never been.

Apparently, Alcatraz is a HUGE spot of curiosity for out-of-towners. Everyone I've talked to who's visiting from far away wants to go there. I guess since I live so close to it (can see it from my MIL's living room window across the bay), I don't think about it.

  • I'd add Chinatown (maybe have dim sum there?) and Haight-Ashbury to the tour. You could walk around Golden Gate Park from the Upper Haight area. I always like taking people up in the DeYoung Museum tower since it's free and has a great view of the city. Maybe driving or walking across the GG bridge too?

  • Golden Gate Park: de Young Museum, Japanese Tea Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, bison pen (I love this last one, it's so random IMO)

    Ferry Building

Shopping on Union St. (or Union Square, but Union St. is so much cuter)

Cable car ride so she can see the infamous hilly sections of the city

Alamo Square to see the Painted Ladies

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

I've lived in the Bay Area all of my life and have been to Alcatraz once. If you want to go there, make sure you buy your tickets well in advance because the tours sell out quick.

What about seeing Beach Blanket Babylon?

  • I would do Golden Gate Park, the Legion of Honor museum (which also has a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge), the Ferry Building, Ghirardelli Square, and the cable cars. I have actually never been to Alcatraz but I know tourists immediately think of it with SF. I have heard you have to get tickets pretty far in advance.

Ditto! As soon as you guys have a date confirmed, I'd make the reservation.

Is Alcatraz an all day thing? I want to take my sister there, but I want to have time/energy to do several of the other things on the list too. How do-able is it to do all of these things in one day?

  • No, it wasn't an all day thing for us (me, my sister, my mom and her husband). We actually walked up to Coit tower and then to the pier where the ferry took off to Alcatraz.

  • I'd to the Alcatraz tour first thing in the morning (it'll only be an hour or two depending how much time they want to walk around, then you can hit pier 39 and the sea lions, walk down fishermans wharf all the way to the Cannery and Ghirardelli Square.

Hope a cable car by Ghirardelli, and take it to union square, walk around and shop there, then hit Beach Blanket in the evening.

That all is definately do-able all in a day.  You can also take a cab back to your car if you park by the pier, and then drive to GG Park and see the conservatory, etc.  We did all this and the zoo in one day when my step kids were here...

  • Union Square

    Golden Gate Bridge

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.
