Introduction & A question

Hello Everyone!

I have been a lurker here for a while just absorbing all the knowledge as a lot of my questions have been asked and answered.

A little bit about me...I have 2 dogs and one husband. :) My older dog is a 3 year old lab mix that I raised from a puppy. My other is an approx. 1 year old carin terrier mix that we adopted right after Thanksgiving this past year. They are adjusting well to each other, but I can tell there are times they need "alone" time. I am a full time grad student at the living in Indianapolis, IN writing my thesis and being a "stay at home wife and doggie mom."

The question I have is: I recently switched the dogs' food to something I thought was better for them, but turned out it made their stomach's upset and made them feel all around "yucky". So, is there anything out there that I can do to help settle their stomach's? I switched their food back, but I can still tell they don't feel well. Any advice would be great.

Thanks and I hope to get to know all of you better!

Re: Introduction & A question

  • Hi.
When you switched food, did you do it gradually? What did you switch from & what were you trying to change to? What did the dogs do that convinced you the switch was not good?
I need more info to be able to help you better.

  • The key is to switch slowly.  I've read that for a week you do 1/4 new food and 3/4 old food, then 1/2 and 1/2, then 3/4 new and 1/4 old, then all new.

And just because it was a better food doesn't mean it was best for your pups.  There are lots of super high quality foods out there, but not all of them are perfect for all dogs.  Keep trying other foods, switching over slowly, and I'm sure you'll find something that agrees with both of them.

  • Ditto to the above questions.  Also you can add a bit of pureed pumpkin (100% pumpkin, not pie filling) in their food.  That can help firm everything up.
  • I guess I did not switch them gradually enough! I will try the pumpkin to help with the diarrhea. Will this also help with the gas? I have noticed that aside from the diarrhea they are more gas-y and this has to be uncomfortable because the older one will whine to me even after I have let him outside, checked the water bowl, and played with him.
  • What food did you start with and what did you switch to?

  • Started with Purina one...went to Ol'Roy High Performance because of the high crude protein percentage... Embarrassed We were trying to get the most protein for our dogs and save a little money along the way.

Oh, you can do SO much better than both of those. Check out the FAQs nutrition page.

Agreed. I'd find a better food & start the transition all over again.... Slowly.

  • Thanks everyone!

Any recommendations on food brands? There are A LOT on that list.

    Well, hello. :)

We feed Canidae, which isn't the top of the top, but it's reasonably priced still, and a good food. We also had good luck when we had them on Taste of the Wild.

I know a lot of people on here also feed Wellness. I believe Petsmart sells that now.  The others you'll have to find at a specialty pet food store, online, or sometimes at farm/feed stores.

  • I feed Wellness Core (which is grain-free).  As PP said, some foods just don't agree with some dogs, even if the food is high quality.  Both of my guys do really well on Wellness Core, so I can feed them the same thing.  Core is a bit on the pricey side, but there are lots of other good brands.  for example, Taste of the Wild (TOTW) is one that shouldn't break the bank but is high quality.

  • Sorry this reply is so late.
I feed my dogs Canidae, all life stages too.
My last dog did really well on Chicken Soup. She lived to a nice old age of 18 & ate chicken soup almost her whole life.
When we got Chilly, as a puppy, last year, I tried feeding her chicken soup for puppies. This food didn't agree with her. Loose stools, passing gas, etc. We switched her to Canidae & it works much better.
It seems chicken soup was too rich for her. She needed a food with more limited ingredients.
