I'm sure you have all heard by now the dental carrier for Tricare beneficiaries will switch from United Concordia to Metlife in May. I checked the Metlife website to see if my dentist is on the list. He's not. In fact, the preferred provider list for my area decreased from over 75 to 20 providers. Apparently Metlife's rates are too high and a lot of the local dental offices cannot afford it.
Has anyone seen a dentist who is not a PP? There's a children's dental office in town I have heard awesome reviews about. I'm considering bringing my daughter there once she turns 2 even though they are not a PP. From what I understand, I would just pay a bit more out of pocket. Is this true?
Re: Dental
Here's one article: http://www.militaryfamily.org/publications/enewsletters/military-family-topics/new-tricare-dental-contract.html
I found out from my husband's squadron though.
I hadn't heard this either, and I'm glad I'm not the only one!
After a moment of panic, I checked and found out my dentist takes Metlife too. Whew!
I wish I could help with your question but I have no idea how that works. That said, I think a great dentist that you're comfortable with is worth the extra expense. A less-good dentist could end up costing more in the long run if they don't do things correctly.
My Blog
I agree - especially when it comes to my daughter's care. I was just curious.
I am surprised they didn't publicize this more.
This is the first I'm hearing of this, too. I love my dentist. I have a long history of hating and fearing dentists, and this guy from the very beginning was awesome. And it looks like he's not on the metlife list.
When does this go into effect? My next cleaning is in May.
Is there any way to petition our current dentist be covered?
It goes into effect May 1st. I talked to my dentist's office manager today. She told me they were given the option to accept MetLife, but declined because if they saw just 50% of TDP beneficiaries they see now, they would be losing money.
My yearly benefits previously were bullshits anyway. I had 3 surgeries in 2010, which they half covered. And for one of them, they covered less than half b/c they claimed that while implants are covered, the bone graft isn't, when it's part of a normal implant surgery. It was news to me and my surgeon, especially since the graft was taken from the bone he had to drill out in order to place the implant. It otherwise would have been medical waste. Yes, still bitter about paying thousands that year.
Oh man
I'd be bitter too!
My dentist won't even do silver fillings anymore so it pretty much came out to me paying 50% of the filling since United Concordia didn't cover any tooth colored ones.
