Fellow Feds: great customer service from Fedloan servicing re: student loan forgiveness

For my fellow Feds who may also have their eye on applying to have some portion of their student loans forgiven in October 2017... I have gotten great customer service from the folks at Fedloan who are managing the program.  I sent in an "employment certification form" (ECF) recently to get on their radar.  I called their customer service today to just talk through my eligibility, and to see if my repayment plan is maximizing my potential future loan forgiveness.

Bla bla bla - just wanted to rave about how nice the lady was, how she talked me through it, and how right now I'm doing everything right to be on track to have loans forgiven in 2017.  I'll have paid off half of my loans by then, so the second half could potentially be forgiven.  Nice!

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.

  • Howdidjadothat!?

I always thought it was related to lawyers who work for the feds.

Care to share? Maybe I can do the same?

P.S., I found it, I vaguely remember but I can't remember if I followed up with more research on it. Thanks though!

  • I haven't even heard about this! This sounds (potentially) awesome. Do you have a link to share?

  • Sigh.  I hate this program.  Mainly because I can derive no benefit from it.  It totally sucks for people that have worked for the Feds for almost 10 years already, and have been on the "wrong" payment plan for that time period.  Totally sucks.
  • I'm waiting to hear back from them about whether or not my payment plan has been "eligible" this whole time.  I've been paying loans back since 2000, but of course nothing counts until after 2007.

Wish all my public school teacher and non-profit work counted, but that was all before 2007 - oh well.

Do you not have a Direct Loan?  Can you only consolidate once?  I hate programs like this that have very specific parameters.  It's really just whether you got lucky and consolidated under the "right" program.

  • I had to really look at this to see how it helped people. But basically only if you are on "income contingent" or "income based" payment plans, does this help you. Those of us on graduated or "other" payment plans, it doesn't apply. Even the standard payment plan... it has to be the "10 year" standard plan... which, doesn't make sense to me because if you are on a 10 year repayment plan, wouldn't your loan be paid off from 2007 to 2017 (10 years)??

I'm on the graduated plan, so this doesn't help me at all :( Bummer!!
