Favorite winery or outdoor places??

It looks like Saturday day is going to be nice out and I need to get out of the city.  What are your favorite places to go and be outdoors?  I am thinking about maybe heading out to some wineries for tastings or going to Great Falls for some hiking.

Those are really the only things I usually do when I get out of the city since sports are over for a month or so until baseball starts.  I am looking for some new ideas of things to do.  Any tips?  Do you have a favorite winery that you can recommend?  TIA!

Re: Favorite winery or outdoor places??

  • my favorite VA winery so far is fabbioli cellars in leesburg

in that area, there are a bunch you can drive to. my other favorites were hiddencroft and chrysalis.

i haven't been to great falls but it looks beautiful!

  • I am a fan of Loudoun Valley winery (http://loudounvalleyvineyards.com/) and Notaviva winery (http://www.notavivavineyards.com/). Both have fantastic views :). Route 9 in Loudoun county is full of great wineries.

Though Great Falls also seems like a good idea, given that the rapids will probably be high (and pretty!) from the all the rain yesterday.

  • Great Falls (either side) is always nice. Also, we like to go to Roosevelt Island to walk around.

For wineries- friends of a friend owns Hiddencroft and we really like it there. The owners are super nice, the wine is good and the setting is nice.

Other outdoorsy things in nice weather: National Arboretum,  walking across the Wilson Bridge from Old Town to National Harbor, walking along rock creek park from Georgetown up towards the zoo, and Mount Vernon.

I have been looking at Notaviva too. This will definitely be one to visit even if it's not tomorrow.
  • We love Fabbioli and 8 Chains North (which is right by Loudoun Valley).  LV is good too, and we like to take a picnic lunch and relax with a bottle at either spot.

  • love hillsboro and bluemont wineries for their views. i know bluemont is having a special chocolate and wine pairing as is lost creek (what's not to love about wine and chocolate?!).

ETA: and, if you're near purcellville you should stop at this:

seems like a farmers market, with wineries, and music, etc. i think we're heading out for that, too. it's from 2-6 tomorrow.
