Question about Graco SnugRide 35

We are ready to transition DD to face forward in her car seat.  We have the Graco Infant SnugRide 35.  But the car seat base says that it, the base, is only for rear facing.  But I can't seem to find a forward facing base that fits the SnugRide 35 car seat.

Do we need to buy a new car seat and base?

TIA

Re: Question about Graco SnugRide 35

  • yes.  these car seats are only RF.  you need to get a convertible car seat.

  • she's in the infant carrier, they are only rear facing. to move to forward facing you would need a convertable seat. but you couldn't pay me to forward face a 1 year old.

  • yes infant seats are not for forward facing. you will have to get a convertible seat (they dont have bases) and you can install it rear or forward facing.  its recommended that you keep kids rear facing in a convertible seat till 2yr old.

you're not supposed to FF a 1 year old anymore anyway, although my ped said we can turn the boys at any time.  i said, "i think they're fine the way they are right now."  less dropped sh!t ;)

that's why those higher weight snugrides are a ripoff.  who is going to carry around a 35 lb baby in one of those things anyway?

  • I thought it was at one year old/over 20 pounds that they go forward facing, no?  Or is this still a huge debate amoung the "professionals"?

Believe me - I'd rather her stay rear facing as long as possible.

i think it was the AAP that changed the recs this past year.  now it's RF until at least 2.

2 years is the recommendation now. But even if it was still 1 year, no one would be forcing you to turn her if you want her to stay RFing.

Keep her in the SnugRide 35. You don't have to take the whole seat in and out of the car. Just use it as you would any other car seat. Leave it in the car and take her in and out. The infant seat is the safest place for as long as possible.

That was the soonest you could turn them, but it's always been recommended to leave them RF as long as possible.  I had my first LO in a convertible seat by 6 months....but she was RF until she was almost 2 1/2 yrs.  I have no idea how you're even carrying a 14 mo old in an infant seat, I can barely do it now with my one mo old!

  • they changed the guidance last year...people tell me i am crazy for keeping her rear facing, but she's staying that way!

that said, we just took her out of the snugride 35 and put the britax in...she's not 35 yet, but she's really not too far off and she was too scrunched in there with her (very thin) jacket on...for the past few months we just left the car seat in the car and used it like it was a regular carseat for the most part...we didn't use it as a carrier, but the convenience of it was nice if she fell asleep with we were out and about that we could just plop her in the wheels and go...it also helped delay having to buy the britax for a while...

You don't have to use it as an infant carrier.  You can just leave it in the car and take her out.  We stopped taking the infant seat out very early on and my son was in it for a long time past 1 year old (he's on the smaller side though).  I did like the option of not waking him up, even when he was heavy though.... so I did use the carrier at times when I was getting home late & mh could carry it in.

  • Definitely get a convertible seat but keep her rear facing until at least 2. 2 is considered the new minimum guideline, although car experts say until they no longer fit in a RF seat. My 2y 7m old is still very happily RF. She rides FF in MILs car (once every few months) and hates it. She drops toys and her sippy cup and blankie and can't get to them and if she falls asleep her head slumps forward, which wakes her up. I'll keep her RF as long as she fits (which should be at least another year based on the height and weight guidelines for our radian)!

  • I thought you were supposed to switch when their feet stick out of the car seat and hit the back of the seat
