with all the new people in this office i am making a sign... HI, i am marie and yes im BLIND

we have hired a TON of new people. and i recgonize i look closely at the screen. (and i have a huge flippin screen) its partially force of habit and mostly because im blind as a bat. and i don't want to make my font big enough where i look at it comfortably but yet our neighbors across the street can read the letters on m y monitor

so everyone walks by. we need to get you glasses. if you get any closer to that screen your going to be in it. sweetie you don't need to kiss the screen.

IM FREAKING LEGALLY BLIND PEOPLE. with the people that are like no really you should see a dr. Then there is that awkward conversation  because people just don't understand being legally blind. and then when i tell them i don't drive. i get that pitty stare oh you poor thing. (i don't even BOTHER getting into the fact i can technically but its a nervous/confidence thing to see if i can pass my test)

and i think yay we could have avoided this WHOLE awkard conversation if you kept your snide comments to yourself.

  • I'm sorry - people can be such dipsh*ts.  I realize some mean well - but still - there is a line you're crossing here.

  • I can only imagine how annoying that is.  It's hard enough for me to explain that my kids can hear even though they are hearing impaired to every new person I meet that asks about their hearing aids!  I don't mind at all explaining it because I want people to understand but I always get those who ask if they have to talk loud to them or if they know sign language.  I know they mean well but after a while it gets exhausting.  I can only imagine how annoyed they are going to be having to explain that to everyone their whole lives!  Hugs

i mean i don't walk with a cane or with dark glasses so i recgonize that being legally blind is one of those odd handicaps. but people REALLY think before you speak.

would you say to someone that limps we REALLY need to get you into PT

the WORST for me was when i turned 21. i had a nj non drivers lisc id. and because NJ lisc used to be the EASIEST TO FAKE. I was CONSTANTLY getting turned down at bars or being asked 952 questions. And I would always say Im legally blind. My faveorite was well you don't look blind. Ok asshat with the mag light you don't look like an idiot. so many times i'd have to ask for a manager and usually have to threaten discrimation law suit. finally one manager said i should get a county id for back up (which i did) but i was ALWAYS met with questions or looks like ya right. i used to get anxiety before going to the bar if i'd get in and be forced to be embarassed or embarass my friends with my scene! (the good thing is usually the threatening to sue would lead in a round of drinks)

now that im old and live in md i don't have that problem lol

  • lol thats after i started to get balls. the first few times i just walked away and cried! lol. and then the first time i told my mom she got all pissed off and it inspired me. it was usually after the bouncers where mean (and usually at jenks) and i'd pull a REAL cop over and say tell him this is real (no one that is under the age of 21 will do that) and then i'd ask for a manager. and you throw the world discrimination and law suit they want to make you happy
